Offensive Player Development
Recruiting is the single most important aspect of college football. You have to sign great players to be great, and I am a fan of the recruiting industry. However, player development after the player gets on campus is a major factor as well.
There was a sign at game day a few years ago that read, "Mark Richt turns five-stars into two-stars."
This staff and this program are great examples of players that get better. Not every player gets better here, but most that buy into the program improve. Five-stars improve here. Two-stars improve here.
To be a championship team, you need players to get better throughout a season, and that has happened at every level to this Clemson team. Here are seven stories of guys on offense who have made a jump this season:
Who thought Wayne Gallman would have 977 yards rushing at this point in the season? Who would have thought this would be the second best back in the ACC? Gallman runs hard and has developed into perhaps the second most important player in this offense.
Gallman is the threat, but Zac Brooks has come a long way since the first day of practice this August. Brooks is playing at a higher level and is gaining confidence as the season progresses. He has always had the ability but returning from injury can be difficult. At times in fall camp, I would not have believed Brooks would be the number-two guy.
This is perhaps the biggest surprise of the season. Perhaps we should listen to Dabo and his staff when they praise players in the spring. There have been times this season where Renfrow has been the most dependable option.
When Deon Cain came out as a five-star, most of us thought he would hit the ground running. The transition was not easy. In camp, Cain looked lost at times. However, Cain has made major strides and is now looking like a five-star in his freshman season.
In the spring Hyatt was behind two-year starter Isaiah Battle, anyone remember that name? It seems like a long time since we had concerns for a true freshman at left tackle. Hyatt graded out at 93% this past week and was named the ACC offensive lineman of the week. He has solidified a position in his freshman season.
Some people didn't even notice a drop off this past week when starting guard Tyrone Crowder went out with turf toe. Maverick Morris has entered games this season and has solidified the offensive front at both tackle and guard. This is a great example of a player continuing to get better every single week.
Remember when Jay Guillermo was gone this spring, and Clemson struggled with depth at center? When Ryan Norton went down with injury at center, you can make an argument that Clemson actually got better at the position.
Tomorrow we will look six players on defense and one special teams player that have made moves this fall.
