‘Mr. ACC’ Mike Hogewood dead at 65 |
Longtime ACC broadcaster Mike Hogewood died on Wednesday. He was 65.
Hogewood was known around the Southeast for his play-by-play, sideline reporter and host duties for events such as the ACC Tournament and more conference action in football and basketball for Jefferson Pilot then Raycom and ACC Network broadcasts. Hogewood was a Greensboro, North Carolina native and a sports director for 15 years with Greensboro’s WFMY News 2 until 2001. “Mike was a dear friend of the ACC for as long as I can remember,” ACC commissioner John Swofford told WFMY Wednesday. “Whether it was ACC Football, Basketball or Olympic Sports, he consistently brought his wealth of knowledge to fans across the league. He was (a) pillar of the Greensboro sports community from his many years as a sports anchor at WGHP and WFMY. Mike will be missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.” “The ACC lost a legend last night with the passing of Mike Hogewood,” said Raycom’s Jimmy Rayburn. “He was a fixture of ACC sports for over 30 years, first with Jefferson Pilot Sports and later with Raycom Sports. Mike was one of the most versatile announcers in the business, performing play-by-play, sideline and host duties for football, men’s & women's basketball, and Olympic sports telecasts. At every ACC Tournament our A1 would always play the old JP “sail with the pilot” song in the moments leading up to air. Hog belting out the words to that tune will be a lasting memory. He genuinely loved what he did and will be missed.
