USA TODAY: ACC sees biggest percentage rise in revenue of Power leagues

by -

All of the latest tax records are in for a 'Power' group of conferences set to shrink, and the ACC is coming off of its biggest revenue report yet.

Per USA TODAY, the ACC tallied the biggest percentage increase in revenue of the 'Power' leagues with a $90 million bump to $707 million total from the 2022-23 fiscal year. The Richmond Times-Dispatch records that as a 13.7% jump.

In payout per school, the ACC ranked third in average payout, at $44.8 million, with UNC getting the biggest payday per the Times-Dispatch ($46.9 million).

Per the Times-Dispatch, ACC income from the ESPN contracts was up 8.5% to $481.7 million. USA TODAY reported that part of the $38 million of the ACC's increased revenue in the fiscal period stemmed from adding Comcast to the ACC Network distribution.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips made $2.8 million in total pay, which outpaced Big 12 commish Brett Yormark ($1.2 million in partial year; base of $2.5M) but trailed the PAC-12's George Kliavkoff (around $4 million), the SEC's Greg Sankey ($3.6M) and former Big Ten commish Kevin Warren ($3.7M; current commish Tony Petitti didn't start until the end of the fiscal year).

According to the reports, partial ACC member Notre Dame received $22.1 million in payout.

A now-dated estimate from 2022, after changes in Playoff structure payout and more expansion, had the Big Ten payout per school jumping to $73 million for this calendar year and to over $90 million by 2029, while the SEC would do the same in 2025 with eclipsing the $70 million mark and then topping $100 million by 2028. The ACC estimate in that report is under the mark so far, however, which pegged the ACC to be last among Power 5 leagues and at just $36.3 million for the 2023 calendar year and not reaching the $40 million mark until 2026.

Power 5 payouts to schools (averages per USA TODAY for 2022-23 fiscal year)

Big Ten - $60.5M to all but two expansion teams from 2010s (Maryland and Rutgers - $58.9M)

SEC - $51.3M

ACC - $44.8M

Big 12 - $44.2M

Pac-12 - $33.6M
