247Sports predicts 2024 Clemson, ACC football season |
247Sports released a win-loss prediction for the entire ACC this week, which places Clemson short of its quest to regain the conference throne.
Clemson is predicted to finish third in the league with a 10-2 record overall and a 7-1 ACC record. "Clemson has two of the biggest games in the ACC next season," 247Sports' Grant Hughes said. "The Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta has set the stage for a huge Week 1 matchup between perennial powers in the ACC and SEC. The trip to Florida State in Week 5 will help define the conference championship race. Clemson projects to lose both, but it would not be a surprise if Dabo Swinney pulled out upsets. Watch out for NC State and at Virginia Tech." The league's 1-2 in the predictions are Florida State (11-1, 8-0) and Miami (11-1, 7-1), which would be the first meeting between the programs in an ACC title game after the divisions were essentially set up for such a meeting upon the 2000s expansion. The league dissolved divisions in football last year in favor in taking the top two records. With no common head-to-head meeting, a trio of predicted 7-1 conference finishes for Clemson, Miami and NC State eventually goes deep into tiebreakers for the other ACC Championship opponent, with the combined predicted win percentage of each team's conference opponents. NC State gets tossed out of the mix for a loss to Clemson, and then in a two-team tiebreaker, Miami has the edge with a .516 win percentage for ACC foes to Clemson's .469 collective win percentage for a slate with three of the worst-predicted teams in Pitt (14th), Stanford (16th) and Virginia (17th). The three-team order would work out the same if the three went to that tiebreaker for three teams as well. Clemson's predicted wins and losses go as follows: Wins: Appalachian State, North Carolina State, Stanford, at Wake Forest, Virginia, Louisville, at Virginia Tech, at Pittsburgh, The Citadel, South Carolina Losses: Georgia, at Florida State New league member SMU is picked to finish fifth with a 9-3 overall record and a 6-2 ACC mark.
