ACC Offensive Line Rankings

ACC Offensive Line Rankings

As I mentioned in a previous blog, evaluating offensive linemen is difficult. First, we don't know their assignments. We may think they missed a block when they were not charged with blocking that defender. Also, it is difficult to watch offensive linemen on television. The camera is usually on the ball and it is difficult to watch linemen. Therefore, my evaluations are based upon reputations. I rely a lot on what others say about their offensive linemen in making these rankings.

1. North Carolina

The Tar Heels return four starters from a good offensive line from a season ago. Three are seniors and one is a junior. James Hurst is an All-American candidate at left tackle as is Jonathan Cooper at left guard. This is the best guard-tackle combo in the league.

2. Virginia

The Cavs return three starters from a year ago but two are All-ACC candidates. Morgan Moses and Oday Aboushi make up the best tackle combo in the conference.

3. Georgia Tech

Tech returns four starters from last year including all three interior offensive linemen. Center Jay Finch and guards Omoregie Uzzi and Will Jackson could receive All-ACC consideration this season.

4. NC State

No one in the league has recruited along the offensive line like NC State but this has been an underachieving group so far. RJ Mattes and Robert Crisp could have signed with any program in America. They were four and five stars respectively out of high school. However, center Camden Wentz has been more productive to date. Duran Christophe is another experienced returner at left guard.

5. Miami

The right side of the Hurricanes offensive line should be excellent in 2012. Seantrel Henderson was the nation's number one offensive lineman coming out of high school but he has battled injuries since arriving in Coral Gables. Right guard Brandon Linder has been their best linemen to this point.

6. Boston College

The Eagles return four starters with the left side of the line being their strength. Bobby Vardaro returns at left guard and Emmett Cleary returns at left tackle. This unit will once again be the strength of the offense.

7. FSU

The Seminoles will eventually get better up front. Last year they played mostly freshman and at some point experience will prevail. Bobby Hart was a highly regarded player as was Jacob Fahrenkrug. This is still the biggest area of concern for the Noles this season.

8. Clemson

The Tigers have major concerns here but Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris and offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell say this group will be better despite lacking experience. Dalton FreemanDalton Freeman

adds toughness.

9. Duke

I watched Duke's offensive line less last year than any other group but the Blue Devils do return four starters from a season ago. The bell cow for the Blue Devils is right guard Laken Tomlinson. I would feel better about this group but they just can't run the ball. Last year they averaged 94 yards per game on the ground.

10. Maryland

The interior linemen return but both tackles have to be replaced. This would be a terrific offensive line but both starting tackles, RJ Dill and Max Garcia, transferred after last season.

11. Virginia Tech

The Hokies return only one starter on this offensive line. Andrew Miller returns at center but that is it. David Wang returns from injury at left guard. The rest of this unit has played very few snaps in Blacksburg.

12. Wake Forest

Like Virginia Tech, Wake Forest returns only one starter. Garrick Williams returns for his senior season at center but the rest have very little experience. Frank Souza moves over from the defense and will take over at left tackle.
