I didn’t get a chance to hear your show Monday. What did you think of the QB play and where do they go from here? Thanks.

Tim,

We were off for Labor Day, so we discussed it on the show today. You can hear the entire conversations on the podcasts of the shows at www.wccpfm.com.

I didn’t think either QB was flawless because both showed some nerves early. I also don’t think either totally outplayed the other to the point where things will change a ton heading into this week.

What I did see was Lawrence looked more decisive. I also noticed when Bryant was in the game, Furman loaded the box more, so the run game opened up with Lawrence. The offense had two drives over 90 yards under Lawrence and he went five for five in scoring drives including the last four for touchdowns. Moving forward, I can see Lawrence playing more and more. I envision Bryant being the change-up guy that gets snaps in the red zone and short yardage to give Clemson an advantage in the plus one running game. In summary, we will see more and more of Lawrence as the season progresses.

The first game of the year is always a time to see what the freshmen look like if the opponent has no chance of challenging and that was certainly the case Saturday. For me, an opening game, like the game against Furman, is one that the coaches get a chance to see a ton of players, the rookies get a chance to find out what it is all about and not much can be made of the day because of the competition. Get your feet wet, get the opening game butterflies out and don't get anyone hurt and those were checked off. We even had reduced water and drink prices and in 90 degree temperature, a big thanks to Clemson for that.

The couple of things that stood out were this Clemson is deep, really deep and B T Potter is the kickoff man we have needed. The only downside to kicking the ball out of the endzone is when a game comes that the wind is howling, is the kickoff defense any good? Maybe the young kicker doesn't care if the wind blows because he kicks the ball low. Having opponents start on the 25 against the Clemson defense seems like a good situation every time.

Unless Dabo sees something I don't, there is no change in quarterback. Trevor Lawrence missed a couple and made some beautiful throws but Kelly Bryant showed why he is the starter at least for now. The QB situation is in good hands because both can play and they have weapons the likes of which we may have never seen at Clemson but remember they have played against Furman. Life gets 100% harder against A&M in College Station in an atmosphere no Clemson player has ever been in but week one was fun, hopefully, 14 more to go.

Thanks for the email. I addressed the QB situation in the above email. I thought an interesting take from the game was the freshmen were the story despite this being a very experienced football team. The freshmen flashed. Lawrence, Dixon, Ross, Kendrick, Carman, McFadden, Thomas, Henry, Goodrich, McMichael and Potter all showed signs of great potential.

I agree that the task is much tougher this weekend, but Clemson has played in tough atmospheres. This program is built for big games in big atmospheres. It seems every road game now is a night game and an ESPN Game Day. I doubt that will be the determining factor.

Mickey, who controls when teams have bye weeks is it the NCAA or is it the conferences? This year I’ve noticed every ACC team has a bye week between Oct. 6-20. Almost every Atlantic Division team has the 13th off, except BC and Louisville, who play each other that week then have their bye the following week.

Meanwhile, in the SEC it’s more spread out Alabama, and Auburn have byes close to Halloween. I’m guessing this is an ACC scheduling decision so that the byes are in the middle of football season, but I could be wrong.

The conferences control that. The schools give the conferences their out of conference schedules then the conference office fits their conference schedule and open dates.
