Five Star QBs

Five Star QBs

When Clemson received a commitment from the top player in the Class of 2018, it sent another sign to the rest of college football. Clemson is a national recruiting power and getting Trevor Lawrence is another step to the Tigers staying among the elite of college football.

To be clear, not all five-star quarterbacks make it big in college football. In fact, only about half actually turn out to be all-conference type players.

What Clemson has done is recruit two five stars and three four stars in the last three classes. Strength in numbers means Clemson's staff has given the program great competition at the position.

Here is a look at the last ten years of five-star quarterbacks according to rivals.com:

2017

Hunter Johnson-Clemson

Kellen Mond-Texas A&M

Notes: Johnson is the nation's top passing quarterback while Mond is the top dual threat QB for the class of 2017.

2016

Jacob Eason- Georgia

Shea Patterson-Ole Miss

Notes: Eason and Patterson showed great signs in their true freshman seasons. Eason passed for 2,266 yards with 14 touchdowns and eight picks. At times he looked great, but other times he looked like a lost freshman. Patterson started the last three games of his freshman season and threw for 880 yards with six TDS and three interceptions.

2015

Josh Rosen-UCLA

Notes: Rosen had a great true freshman season. He threw for 3,670 yards with 23 TDs and 11 interceptions. He played half of his sophomore season before getting injured against Arizona State.

2014

Deshaun Watson-Clemson

Kyle Allen-Texas A&M

Notes: Watson has had an amazing career. He has 9,489 yards with 86 TDs and 30 picks in leading Clemson to two ACC title and two College Football Playoff appearances. Allen played two years at A&M but sat out this year as a transfer to Houston. He has over 3,500 yards with 33 TDs and 14 picks.

2013

Max Browne-USC

Christian Hackenburg-Penn State

Notes: Browne waited his turn at Southern Cal his first two seasons and became the starter this year before being beaten out. He is transferring to Pitt. Hackenburg started as a true freshman at Penn State. In his three years, he passed for 8,318 yards with 48 touchdowns and 31 picks. he was a second-round pick of the New York Jets.

2012

Jameis Winston-FSU

Gunner Kiel-Notre Dame

Notes: Winston red-shirted at FSU but made a huge splash as a red-shirt freshman when he won the Heisman Trophy and helped the Noles to a national title. In two seasons at FSU, he passed for 7,964 yards with 65 TDs and 28 picks. He lost one game in college. Winston was the top pick in the NFL Draft and made the Pro Bowl last season. Kiel had a rocky career. He committed to Indiana then LSU before signing with Notre Dame. He then transferred to Cincinnati.
