Martavis Bryant, Deon Cain sign with new NFL teams |
A pair of Clemson 'WRU' alums are on new NFL teams today.
After a visit on Monday, Martavis Bryant signed with the Washington Commanders, getting a second shot at a comeback to the NFL field. "Getting here now, we'll find out the things that he can do well," Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Tuesday, "and then how we can feature them. He's got real size, the catch radius...whether it's the red zone or option routes we can throw away from a defender where this is incomplete or my guy's getting it." The chance comes after his league indefinite suspension was lifted during the 2023 season and he spent time on and off the Dallas Cowboys roster. He stayed on the practice squad and didn't see his first snaps since the 2018 season, however, and was released in May. Bryant was a top target in his time with the Steelers from 2014-17, where the former fourth-round NFL draft pick averaged 15.2 yards per catch with 17 touchdowns in the regular season. He also added three touchdowns and 322 yards in four playoff games in Pittsburgh. Bryant also played a season with the Oakland Raiders in 2018. He tallied 61 catches for 1,354 yards with 13 touchdowns in a Clemson uniform. Elsewhere, spring league standout Deon Cain signed with the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday. A former USFL Championship Game MVP, Cain is getting a shot with a fifth different NFL team since going pro in 2018, initially drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round, then having stints around spring league action with Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Philadelphia. He ranked ninth in the UFL last year with 436 receiving yards and three touchdowns and also 726 all-purpose yards total.
