Former Clemson standout Ben Boulware joins Dabo Swinney's staff |
The 'Junkyard Dog' is back roaming the Clemson practice fields.
Former Clemson standout Ben Boulware has joined Dabo Swinney's coaching staff as an unpaid intern. "Ben's gonna come to be an intern, an unpaid intern for us," Swinney told the media Thursday. "He reached out to me a few weeks ago, and he's been really praying about it and thinking about trying to get into coaching. It's just something that's been heavy on his heart." Swinney wanted Boulware to show he was serious by attending the recent staff meetings. "I told him, 'The only way I'm even going to discuss it further with you, we've got a staff meeting next Monday; you've got to come to that,' Swinney said. 'And then, we've got five days of 'All-In' meetings, and you've got to come to that. And after that, if you still think you want to do it, then we can talk about an opportunity for you.'" Swinney understands that this could be the start of a promising coaching career if Boulware seizes the opportunity. "Man, he's fired up. This is what he really wants to do," Swinney said. "And so he'll have an opportunity to come in and work as a full-time intern, and we'll see how it goes. I'm super excited — I love giving guys an opportunity when I can, with our former players especially. So, Ben Boulware, it's fun to have him back. I told him he was a crappy fan; he's going to be a much better coach." During his college career, Boulware had 352 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 8 1/2 sacks, and five interceptions.
