Clemson defender Barrett Carter named to ESPN, CBS Sports All-America teams |
Clemson's
Barrett Carter is expected to be one of the nation's best linebackers once again.
Carter was named first-team preseason All-America by both ESPN and CBS Sports on Wednesday. "Clemson's defense received great news when Carter announced last December he was returning for his senior season," ESPN's Chris Low said. "He's a 6-1, 230-pound dynamo who has shown versatility throughout his career by moving around and playing different roles. He's as effective rushing the passer as he is dropping into pass coverage. Dabo Swinney called Carter 'one of the best pure football players I've had in 20 years.'" Carter has also notched preseason honors with watch list spots for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, Bednarik Award, Butkus Award and Wuerffel Trophy, as well as All-America designations for Athlon, Lindy's, Pick Six Previews (all first team), College Football Network, Phil Steele and Walter Camp (the latter group all second team). Last season, Carter was first-team All-America preseason for ESPN and Phil Steele and second team for several more outlets. Carter finished with only second-team and third-team All-ACC honors after ranking second on the team in tackles (67) and credited with 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, six pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery in 633 snaps over 12 games (all starts). He was a fourth-team All-American for Phil Steele in 2022.
Peter Woods was also named second-team All-America by ESPN at defensive tackle.
Woods was a 2023 Freshman All-American credited with 27 tackles (2.5 for loss) and a forced fumble in 307 snaps over 12 games (two starts). He is slated to see time at defensive end and defensive tackle this year.
