AD expects Clemson-Georgia matchup in ‘not too distant future’ |
A renewed Clemson-Georgia rivalry may not be too far down the road.
Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity told the Athens Banner-Herald Wednesday that he sees the two schools meeting “in the not too distant future.” The story notes an opening for a Power 5 opponent on Georgia’s schedule in the seasons from 2021-24, which McGarity said a Clemson-Georgia matchup could fall. As of Clemson’s latest schedule announcements, the Tigers have an open spot on the non-conference slate for 2021 and 2024. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney welcomed a return to the rivalry at a recent Prowl & Growl stop. The two schools last played in a home-and-home series in 2013-14 with the home team coming out on top in each. Clemson and Georgia have played 64 times total (42-18-4 in the Bulldogs’ favor). McGarity told the Athens Banner-Herald that talks between the two schools haven’t gone far enough to determine if the two would play at a neutral-site or on either campus. Clemson will play at Texas A&M in 2018 and then the Aggies return to Death Valley in 2019. Notre Dame is then on the schedule in 2020 (away), 2022 (away) and 2023 (home).
