Simple tweet causes Texas A&M player to go after Brent Venables on Twitter

A simple recruiting tweet turned into a war of words as a Texas A&M football player fired the first salvo in anticipation of Clemson’s matchup in College Station on September 8.

The Tigers and Aggies face off for the first time since 2005 and the first time the Tigers have faced the Aggies as an SEC team. Clemson won the last meeting at Clemson in 2005 by a 25-24 score on a late field goal by Jad Dean. Texas A&M won the previous three meetings and holds a 3-1 lead in the series.

The two teams are also scheduled to play at Clemson on September 7, 2019. The matchup features two head coaches who know each other very well – Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher spent several seasons at FSU before leaving for a larger contract.

Both sides have been quiet – it is summer – until Texas A&M’s Leon O’Neal took a shot at Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables Sunday evening.

To set the stage – TigerNet is covering The Opening in Frisco, TX, and took a few minutes to talk with the nation’s best linebacker, Nakobe Dean. Dean told TigerNet that Venables has told him that if he chooses Clemson, his first play in a Clemson uniform will be a blitz. TigerNet tweeted out the comment, and O’Neal apparently didn’t like it.

Before O’Neal eventually signed with Texas A&M, he was recruited by Clemson and left a late winter visit to the Clemson campus with many thinking O’Neal had given the Clemson coaches a silent commit.

He had a change of heart after going back home and signed with the in-state Aggies.

O’Neal responded to the tweet this way:

It’s interesting that O’Neal would use that phrase – he never signed with Clemson and never played for Venables. Of course, asking something in the world of college football and recruiting to make sense is asking a lot.

The tweet didn’t sit well with a few Clemson players. Amari Rodgers responded with a tweet that he later deleted, and then Trayvon Mullen responded in a gracious way:
