Maturity to Handle Success

This is a subject I often talk about on my radio show and this blog. Clemson has to do this weekend what most of us can't do. They have to be mature enough to handle success.

Human beings are survivalists. We are at our best when times are at there worst.

In my lifetime, the two best times in this country in terms of national pride came off of our worst times. In the late 1970s, the Carter administration had this country in crisis mode. In the early 1980s, we rallied and felt the best about the nation as any time in my lifetime.

September 11, 2001, was the most significant day in my lifetime. We were devastated. But I enjoyed watching our country pull together and felt better about this nation than at any point since.

Watch what happens in our state the next few weeks. South Carolina was flooded. Lives were lost. I had a cousin that lost her home and had to be rescued by boat. But out of this adversity, this state will rise and there will be some moving stories of new heroes that will emerge.

I am still amazed at how the members of the Charleston AME Church handled the murders and showed so many how to respond in the face of tragedy.

On the other hand, look at what happens when we have success. So many of us don't have the discipline or the maturity it takes to handle success. There have been so many examples of this in our country. Maybe the housing bubble of 2008 is one of the best examples.

When we get a raise, many of us blow it on unnecessary items. We all have seen the horror stories of people who win the lottery, then go broke.

How many of us have gone on a diet and lost the weight but couldn't handle that success and gained it all back again? We get fat and happy, and we forget what got us there in the first place.

Clemson's football team has this issue this week. When the players walk around campus this week, all they will hear about is the Notre Dame game. Pretty girls will bring it up. Their classmates will talk about it. Their professors will remind them again and again. It is human nature. It is what me and my friends will talk about over lunch all week.

Meanwhile, Georgia Tech is trying to heal after a three-game losing streak.

Don't get me wrong, Clemson is the better team, and the Tigers are playing at home, but this one is dangerous.

I don't like the fact that Paul Johnson's offense has given the Tigers a hard time in a couple of games, but at least Clemson respects the Jackets as a result. Tech will have their attention. I also like the fact that Clemson didn't play great Saturday night, and there is room for improvement this week.

As challenging as Tech's offense is, the real opponent this week is Clemson and maturity. Are the Tigers mature enough to do what most of us can't? Can the Tigers handle success?
