Mickey,

Mickey,

Why does Clemson still have two offensive coordinators? Following the Texas A&M game, many writers (and fans) argued that the play calling was not efficient and seemed to not match the personnel on the field and I clearly remember thinking the same as I tuned into the game. I'm confused on how their play calling actually works and lately, they seem to favor screens more than ever or designed QB runs rather than spreading the ball around.

Respectfully,

Chris

Chris,

I don’t think two coordinators is an issue. This system has helped Clemson to a 46-4 record. One of those losses they scored 40 against Alabama. In another, they score 42 against Pittsburgh. I think Tony Elliott is one of the brightest minds in all of college football. What happened at Texas A&M is the interior offensive line didn’t play very well. Also, the Aggies forced Clemson to throw the ball outside the numbers, and the Tigers had some success there.

They have spread the ball around. Last weekend 14 different receivers caught the ball. So far this season 16 different receivers have caught passes.

I don’t mind the screen game. A&M’s screen game was a key to their success. What I don’t like is when the screen game doesn’t work. For whatever reason. Bryant is not great in the screen game.

This offense is not hitting on all cylinders yet. Dabo has mentioned that several times. But I think as the season progresses and they find the right combinations, this offense will hit its stride. I think more of Etienne, Lawrence, Higgins, Ross, Rodgers, Renfrow, Galloway, and improvement in the offensive line will make the play calling look better.

Mickey,

Can you settle an argument I am having with a coot fan at work? I told him how much more explosive our offense is this year with Lawrence and wideouts like Ross and Higgins. I told him in the preseason this would be the case because Dabo fixes problems and last year it was a problem. Can you give me ammunition like the long passes and touchdowns this season? Thanks.

Tigerman

Tigerman,

I think it is obvious both Bryant and Lawrence have hit bigger plays this year. It takes a biased set of eyes to disagree with that. But if he still needs proof give him this:

Clemson is second in the nation in plays over 30 yards. The Tigers are second in the country in plays over 40 yards. Clemson is fifth in the country in plays over 50 yards and third in the country in plays over 60 yards.

Hope this helps.

Mickey,

On your radio show, you have talked about Clemson getting to the 40-500 club. After three games do you think this offense is capable of that? Thanks. Love the show and email blog.

Tom

Tom,

To date, Clemson is averaging 38 points per game and 513 yards per contest. I do think two things will happen in the remainder of the season. First, Clemson’s offense will get better. Lawrence will get better with more experience. I think the staff will get better with the personnel and the play calling. This offense can get into a rhythm as they progress through the schedule.

However, the other thing that will happen is the defenses will get more talented too. Let’s face it, Furman and Georgia Southern are not as talented as future opponents. But the remaining opponents’ defenses haven’t been very impressive yet.

Here is a look at how the future opponents rank nationally in terms of points allowed and total defense:

GT 71-24

Syracuse 41-78

Wake Forest 77-107

NC State 9-60

FSU 80-96

Louisville 72-82

Boston College 58-64

Duke 27-77

South Carolina 86-56
