A Different Level of Hype |
A Different Level of Hype
When Clemson faced Notre Dame in 1977, I saw something I had never seen before...ticket scalpers. I was a little fella at the time and hadn't seen too many $100 bills, but I saw fans standing in Lot 5 holding them up looking for tickets. When the Irish come to Death Valley this season we could see a new level of hype and excitement. Like many of you, I don't get the Notre Dame appeal. I guess its a nice campus and I understand the history, but I have never been a fan and don't get the infatuation. I was told there are few hotel rooms left in Clemson despite a three night minimum at $750 a night. I am already getting ticket request from fans from both schools. My guess is we could see scalpers getting $500-$750 per ticket as the game approaches. The rarity of a Notre Dame visit is a factor. The Irish haven't been here since 1977 and won't return again until 2023. When Notre Dame last came to Death Valley Clemson was ranked 15th and Notre Dame was ranked fifth. The Irish went on to win the national title with Joe Montana under center. This year the two teams could be ranked even higher. Most of the pre-season magazines have the Tigers and Irish in their top 15. Some have both in the top ten. Notre Dame opens with a home game against Texas followed by a road trip to Virginia. They return for home games against Georgia Tech and UMass before coming to Clemson. My guess is the Irish will be favorites in each of their games prior to coming to town. The Tigers open with home games with Wofford and Appalachian State before a Thursday night trip to Louisville. Clemson then has 17 days off before Notre Dame comes south. If Clemson comes in at 3-0 the two-plus weeks of hype for the Clemson-Notre Dame game could be the biggest ever in Death Valley. In my lifetime the biggest games I have seen in Death Valley include 1987 Georgia game, 1988 FSU game, the first Bowden Bowl in 1999, 2005 Miami contest, 2006 Georgia Tech, 2007 Boston College, 2011 FSU, the 2013 Georgia and FSU contests. A lot can happen between now and October 3, but this could be one of the most hyped games in the history of one of the best venues in college football Prayer List The prayer list is a medium for our community to recognize those that are in need.
