Clemson Sets Records in the Classroom |
CLEMSON, S.C. - Student-athletes at Clemson set semester records for overall GPA, academic honor roll members, and President's List honorees according to a report released by the University's Athletic Council on Friday.
Clemson's 501 student-athletes posted a combined GPA of 2.74, breaking the previous best of 2.71 set in the spring of 1999. It was just .04 short of the overall Clemson student GPA of 2.78 for the spring semester. That is the smallest GPA differential in history between the student body and the student-athletes. A total of 229 student-athletes were on the academic honor roll (3.0 GPA or better), also a single semester record, in fact breaking the previous mark by 48. That means 45.7 percent of Clemson student-athletes were on the academic honor roll. The career cumulative GPA of every athletic team at Clemson is currently at least a 2.44. "First, we have to thank the our staff at Vickery Hall and the student-athletes themselves for this positive report," said Bill D'Andrea, director of the Clemson student-athlete enrichment program. "More and more student-athletes are taking advantage of our resources and programs at Vickery Hall. That has been the most rewarding aspect of this job." Since the construction of Vickery Hall in 1991, the overall GPA of Clemson's athletic teams has risen from 2.33 to the current 2.74. The number of academic honor roll recipients has increased from 97 to 229. D'Andrea has supervised the program since its exception. Eight different programs, including the football, men's basketball and baseball teams, all had semester records for number of athletes on the honor roll. The Clemson football team had 34 players with a 3.0 or better, eight more than the previous semester record of 26 set in the spring of 1992. The team GPA for Tommy Bowden's grid team was 2.35, best ever for a fall semester and third best on record for any semester. Leading the way individually were first-team Academic All-American Kyle Young and second-team Academic All-American Chad Carson, who both had a perfect 4.0 in the classroom. Jeff Scott, son of Clemson Assistant Head Coach Brad Scott, also had a 4.0, as did holder Tucker Hamrick. The Clemson men's basketball team had a 2.39 team GPA, its best fall semester since 1995 and its fourth best semester in the last 30 semesters. Adam Allenspach and Pash Bains were two of a record five Tiger basketball players on the academic honor roll. Walker Holt and Jeremy Shyatt, son of Clemson head coach Larry Shyatt, made the Dean's List. The Clemson baseball team had 17 academic honor roll selections, also highest on record, and the team had a 2.72 team GPA, tied for the second best semester on record. Other programs that had record semesters in terms of academic honor roll selections were men's soccer (18), men's swimming (11), men's track (22), rowing (37) and volleyball (9). The 37 academic honor roll selections by the rowing team set a record for one team in one semester. Every athletic team had at least a 2.30 GPA for the semester and has at least a 2.44 on the cumulative level, also a first. A record 27 student-athletes were on the President's List (4.0), breaking the record of 21 set last spring. Sixty-three student-athletes made the dean's list, second highest total on record. Among the dean's list selections was golfer Jonathan Byrd, a first-team Academic and on-course All-American last year, just the seventh student-athlete in Clemson history to accomplish that competition-academic double in the same year. While six men's teams broke records for number of student-athletes on the academic honor roll, four women's programs had the highest semester GPAs, all exceeding 3.0. Leading the way was the rowing team with a 3.18, the third straight semester Coach Suzzie Lueck's team has had at least a 3.0 team GPA. Jolene Hoover's volleyball team had a record setting season on the court with a 31-3 record and first ever top 25 finish. In the classroom they posted a 3.09 team GPA with a record nine players on the academic honor roll. Heidi Cooper led the way with a perfect 4.0 in the classroom. The women's tennis team had a 3.04 team GPA, the 10th time in the last 11 semesters the team has been over a 3.0. Six of the seven team members made the academic honor roll. The women's swimming team was also at 3.04 and six team members (Krystal Ball, Jenna Burtch, Jessica Diebel, Virginia Kirouac, Magdalena Kupiec and Katie Mizell) were named to the President's List.
