2013 Schedule Thoughts
Four Saturdays Off It is a strange year in college football this season because every team in the country will have two open dates. However, because Clemson has two Thursday night games, the Tigers will actually not play on four Saturdays this fall. Clemson will not play on September 14, September 21, November 9 and November 16. Open Dates A negative to the schedule is the fact that Clemson will face four conference teams that have an open date before they face the Tigers. Clemson plays Georgia Tech and NC State on Thursday nights and on those games the Tigers are also off the previous week. Syracuse has an open date before hosting Clemson while the Tigers have to play Wake Forest the week before heading to the Carrier Dome. The biggest problem I have with the schedule is the fact that Florida State gets a week off to prepare for Clemson while the Tigers will play Boston College. An Army of One It is interesting that Clemson plays two opponents the week after they face off against Army. Boston College and Wake Forest will have to prepare for two totally different offenses when playing Army the week before Clemson. High School Schedules I can see why Florida State has problems with attendance. Their home schedule is weaker than pond water. The home conference schedule brings arch rival Miami to town but the Noles also get NC State, Syracuse and Maryland. Good luck trying to convince the faithful that Doak Campbell will fill up for any of the three out of conference home games featuring Nevada, Bethune-Cookman and Idaho. I guess Godby High School wasn't available. NC State has a new staff that has to be loving the out of conference schedule. The Wolfpack host Louisiana Tech, Richmond, Central Michigan and East Carolina. Good luck with season tickets with that schedule. No Northern Durham High School? Thursday Night Clemson has two Thursday night games this season. The Tigers travel to NC State on September 19 and host Georgia Tech on November 29. The other Thursday night ACC games are: North Carolina @ South Carolina August 29 Presbyterian @ Wake Forest August 29 Virginia Tech @ Georgia Tech September 26 Miami @ North Carolina October 17 Friday Night Lights The ACC dives int the Friday night lineup this season with two Friday night tilts. Wake Forest visits Boston College on a Friday, September 6th, while Miami plays at Pittsburgh on Friday, November 29. Big Chances The ACC will once again have a chance to knock off some national powers. Some of the intriguing games are: Florida @ Miami Oregon @ Virginia Virginia Tech vs. Alabama Three Top Tens Clemson has the most difficult out of conference schedule in the conference. The Tigers face two pre-season top ten candidates in the season opener against Georgia and the regular season finale against South Carolina. When you add the Florida State game int the mix you get three teams ranked in the top ten from last year's final poll. Other Oddities Boston College has two trips to the other side of the country. The Eagles play Southern Cal and at New Mexico State. In a weird schedule, Maryland does not play an ACC game until October 5 when they travel to Florida State.
