Reports: ACC has zeroed in on next commissioner |
The ACC has found its next commissioner, per multiple reports late Sunday and early Monday.
Yahoo Sports posted the news late last night that Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips is being targeted for the job. ESPN confirmed the report soon after. Phillips has presided over one of the more successful runs in Northwestern history and big facility improvements along the way. He was regarded as a leading candidate for the Big Ten commissioner role when that job was open before Kevin Warren was hired. Northwestern football has made two Big Ten title game appearances and four bowl games and the men's basketball team made its first-ever NCAA Tournament during Phillips' 13-year run. Phillips holds degrees from the University of Illinois, Arizona State and Tennessee, where he worked in the athletic departments in and also spent time with Notre Dame. He worked with Duke AD Kevin White while with Arizona State. Yahoo reports that an announcement is "expected soon" over Phillips taking over. John Swofford announced earlier this year that this would be his last sports season with the ACC after 23 years. Clemson president Jim Clements was at one time regarded as a leading candidate for the job until recently, while Tigers athletic director Dan Radakovich was considered an early contender.
