Rankings: Clemson moves up after winning week

by - Staff Writer -

Clemson continued its move up the rankings in one major poll Monday.

Monte Lee’s Tigers notched a top-25 win over Coastal Carolina early last week and then swept a doubleheader Sunday for a road series win at Notre Dame.

After vaulting four spots last week, Clemson slotted one spot forward to No. 7 in the Baseball America Top 25. D1Baseball kept the Tigers at No. 11 this week, with East Carolina jumping them and moving to No. 7 after taking 2-of-3 at Washington.

Collegiate Baseball bumped Clemson up to No. 3 in its poll Monday morning.

NC State paces the ACC in the rankings on BA, up to No. 2 after a series win at Louisville over the weekend. Florida State dropped behind Clemson to No. 9. D1Baseball also has the Wolfpack in the top-5 (4) and Florida State down to No. 12. Clemson (25-7, 10-5 ACC) is one game behind NC State (25-6, 11-4) in the divisional standings, while Duke (27-6, 10-4) holds a half-game lead on UNC (21-11, 10-5) in the Coastal.

Clemson continues to pace the league in RPI (5), ahead of Florida State (6), UNC (12) and NC State (14).

Freshman Kier Meredith had a noteworthy debut series at Notre Dame coming off an injury (shoulder), notching a triple, a home run, three stolen bases and reaching base eight times total in three starts.

Clemson took the ACC lead in team ERA over the weekend (3.14), ranking second in walks allowed (3.5 per game) and first in overall runs allowed (3.5 per game).

The team batting average is next-to-last in the ACC (.248) but that stat is flipped in home runs (43; second only to NC State’s 47). They've been consistently middle of the pack in scoring this season (6 per game).

The Tigers are tied for third in the league in fielding percentage (.976) behind Duke (.980) and Pittsburgh (.978).

Clemson resumes play in the first of two games over two weeks with No. 18 Georgia (D1Baseball), meeting the Bulldogs (23-9) Tuesday in North Augusta (7 p.m. start). The Miami Hurricanes (13-18, 7-8 ACC) come to town on the weekend starting with a 6:30 start on Friday, coming off of seven losses in their last eight games.
