Clemson leads nation in SN preseason first-team All-Americans

Clemson led the nation with three first-team preseason first-team All-American selections by Sporting News on Wednesday.

Freshman All-American Trevor Lawrence gets the first-team QB nod over Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa.

"Lawrence's performance in last year's College Football Playoff championship game is still fresh, part of a campaign in which the rising sophomore threw for 3,280 yards, 30 touchdowns and just four interceptions," SN's Bill Bender writes. "He'll have competition from Tua Tagovailoa and others, but we're dealing with a generational talent already considered a lock to be the No. 1 pick two years from now in 2021. He's that good."

Also on first-team offense is the reigning ACC player of the year Travis Etienne, who led the nation in rushing touchdowns last season (24) and averaged 8.1 yards per carry.

The defensive first-team rep for the Tigers is linebacker Isaiah Simmons, who posted 97 stops (9.5 for loss) with seven pass breakups last season.

Five Tigers picked up preseason All-American honors overall, with rising sophomore target Justyn Ross and freshman All-American defensive end Xavier Thomas.
