Maurice Nelson Commits to Clemson

CLEMSON -- According to Mickey Plyler, Crestwood Linebacker/Rover Maurice Nelson (6-2, 205, 4.4 ) has committed to Clemson. He selected the Tigers over South Carolina, Maryland, and Georgia. He is ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the state of South Carolina by Mickey Plyler. This is the eighth commitment for the Tigers in just over a week.

“For a long time I knew where I wanted to go," Nelson told Plyler. "But I decided to hold out and look around at other schools. Deep down inside I knew I would be at Clemson. I chose Clemson because of the loyalty to me and the other players they have. Also I have a lot of friends up there. Clemson is like a second home to me. Also Coach Stockstill has been a great recruiter. He came to me like a friend."

As a junior, Nelson recorded 132 tackles and 11 tackles for loss. This past season he had Nelson had 113 tackles and 7 tackles for loss and was selected to the SC North-South All-star game.

“This is a nice commitment for Clemson,“ said recruiting analyst Mickey Plyler. “It is a big position of need. Clemson needs linebackers and Nelson is one the top ones in the state. His speed is his biggest attribute. This is one Clemson had to have. Because of the depth chart I can see Nelson playing very early.”

Nelson had his official visit to Clemson on January 10th. He was hosted by his brother and current Clemson linebacker Roosevelt Nelson. Playing on the same team as his brother is important to Maurice Nelson.

"A lot of people don’t get to a chance to play with their older brother or younger brother at a major college,” said the younger Nelson. “I'd like to play with him like we did in high school."

Nelson also says he will cancel scheduled visits to Georgia and Maryland.
