Tigers Get Commitment from JUCO All-American

CLEMSON -- First team JUCO All-American defensive back Brian Staley (5-10, 185, 4.4) has committed to Clemson. Staley selected the Tigers over South Carolina and Nebraska. Staley also had offers from Mississippi State, Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, Tennessee, Florida State and LSU.

“Brian Staley’s commitment is one of their keys to their class,” said recruiting analyst Mickey Plyler. “He could be a great compliment to Justin Miller at the other corner. Or if another corner develops he could help move Miller to free safety.”

Staley, originally from Aiken, S.C., was placed at Georgia Military JC by the Tigers out of high school after he did not qualify. As a freshman at Georgia Military, Staley led all Juco players with nine interceptions. He returned 6 of those for touchdowns. Staley then added 10 more interceptions the next year for a total of 19 in the Juco ranks.

“We saw him in high school, and it was obvious he was one of the best players in the state his senior year,” said Plyler. “He is hard hitter who isn’t afraid to help in run support. To have 10 interceptions in one year also says a lot about his ability.”

Staley could step right into the lineup as the Tigers are currently thin at defensive back with the loss of Brian Mance to graduation and Kevin Johnson to suspension. Walk-on defensive back Toure Francis is also trying to come back from a serious knee injury.

“With today’s game you can never have enough cover corners because of the advanced passing game in college,” said Plyler.

Staley was leaning to the Tigers after his official visit on January 10th. He had previously visited Nebraska and is expected to cancel a visit to South Carolina on January 24. Staley will have three years to play two at Clemson.
