He has offers from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Auburn, Boston College, Clemson, Connecticut, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Rutgers, Temple, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia. North Carolina was the first school to offer him. Merritt started as a left guard as a freshman at Friendship Collegiate HS. Since his transfer to Archbishop Carroll, he has played at right tackle.
