For a team used to playing for titles, just going to the fourth round of the playoffs was a disappointment for Richmond Co (Rockingham, NC) linebacker Dannell Ellerbe.

“People said we had a good year, but we were looking for a championship,” said Ellerbe.

Ellerbe (6-2, 196) who was already highly recruited going into his senior season found most teams did not want to even challenge him. Instead, they elected to run the ball away from him.

“That happened every game,” said Ellerbe who finished the year with 78 tackles and 9 sacks. “I got tired of it.”

Ellerbe has offers from Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Duke, NC State, ECU, Nebraska and Michigan. Ellerbe will visit Clemson on January 9 and after that will visit NC State, Tennessee, Georgia, and ECU.

“Coach O’Cain is recruiting me for Clemson. I like him because he is a straight forward guy. My coach and him are good friends. They used to coach together at NC State. My coach tells me he will not steer me wrong.”

Ellerbe said there was no leader now and will wait till to make a decision after his visits.

High school teammate QB/WR Jamar Bryant (6-2, 195) will join Ellerbe in playing for North Carolina in the Shrine Bowl this weekend.

“He (Bryant) is a great player,” said Ellerbe. “He can do anything on the field.”

Ellerbe said the two have talked about going to the same school.
