What do you miss most about '80s Clemson football
Jul 5, 2012, 6:11 PM
|
|
and what are a few things you would bring back today?
Personally, I would bring back the traditional uniforms (orange/white at home, white/white away, and all orange for big games.)

Dabo has brought back traditional uniforms pretty much.

We wore all white in every away game last year except at GT because they wore white and we wore all orange.
We only wore orange pants twice at home, against Auburn and FSU.
We also wore all orange in the Orange Bowl.

You are so right!!! That and the way our Defenses played are the biggest differences in then and now. Also, we were 3 deep with NFL caliber talent at most positions in those days. That depth is demoralizing to an opponent. We are getting there, and it is going to be very special when we do, but it starts with the lines.

i ever saw and i saw it live......smothering, stifling, hitting with a swagger we've not seen since. I feel bad for the younger fans who have no idea what type of defense we used to watch week in, week out, even when our O was shut down....they were the best athletes on the team.

You are so right! It has taken us all this time to begin to get what he (Hatfield) inherited. When he came to Clemson we were 3 deep at pretty much every position with NFL caliber talent, and when he left the cupboard was bare. He added, not one thing, and it has taken 30 years, so far, to get back on the right track, but I see Dabo getting us there, and I give TB some major credit for starting the process.

We are probably better on offense, equal in punting with Pinion, and close in placekicking - some of the 80s had the tee advantage.

I didn't remember the coots being on probation then. They weren't good enough to get any scrutiny from the NCAA, and that must be the reason, along with not accomplishing much with their rule bending. They were, as they still are, non-factors.

Jul 5, 2012, 10:05 PM

my CO back at Camp Lejeune was a Capt at the time and he played TE at Maryland from '84 to '88....some good Terp teams back then who played us hard. I asked him about playing against Clemson and this is what he said, "Man, we hated playing Clemson because you KNEW you'd be sore for a week, they wouldn't say anything after they drilled you, their LB's and DL were so physical it was crazy and they'd rotate in and out every other play so you had a fresh lunatic knocking the hell out of you every other play it seemed. They were the most fundamentally sound team we played year after year and that crowd in Death Valley seemed like they were on the #### field"......pretty much sums up what i miss about the '80's.

I miss Coach Ford being on the sideline, and our attitude of, "here we are. We are coming for you! Try to stop us." It was "in your face" football. I think we are getting there again.

but for those who witnessed it, we had more speed on defense than the mighty Sooners did on offense....our LB's and DB's ran down their RB's and WR's all day, not to mention pounding Holieway's ### into the ground.....our D was the best athletes on the field by a mile....WVU got the treatment the next year.

This was a great post!!! It caused every serious reader to think of the positive things we were doing when we were at, probably, ou best, and interject them into the present. We have much to be proud of, and we have a very, very bright future, and that future has already begun. TU to you!!!

Well....
Jul 7, 2012, 2:32 PM

there were no internet dumbazzes for sure....but there was plenty of bitching and whining about the way Ford ran his offense....specifically about the lack of a passing attack.....about play calling, etc.
The internet has just created about 10,000% more experts who know what the problems and solutions are for everything ailing the athletic dept.......and given them an outlet to express their "expert" opinion.

The confidence that we took the field with every game. Nom we didn't win all of them but we had swagger and knew we were the better,d tougher team. Unlike some others that have posted, I have seen very little that indicate to me we are truly regaining that. We seem to have hope rather than confidence.
