I do see what Dabo is doing with his hires

Long analysis done short, Dabo seems to be trying to insulate Clemson culture from the crazy.

It's a full-on zoo out there right now. NIL's, coaching changes, conference changes. Just a sea of uncertainty and rapid change.

But over here, Dabo's certainly not chasing trends. He's trying to put the emphasis one place: CLEMSON. Period. He wants that to be the only name that matters. Coaches come and go, but the Clemson system is solid, development-based, consistent. You wanna chase the bucks, go chase the bucks. You wanna belong to a system that re-recruits yearly and can cut you or run you off at any time, go for it. The SEC awaits you. He clearly isn't interested in relying on names anymore: he's obviously banking now on Clemson culture, Clemson continuity, Clemson stability.

So you see his thought process: by growing his own staff in-house, from GA's/analysts to position coaches to coordinators, essentially what you're doing is buying extra years from those coaches because they are not "names" yet. In contrast a big-name coach gets huge bucks...and will then usually turn around and better-deal you the next year if he has a good year, so with a big-name guy you pay for your (potential) initial success with instability later.

If these from-within hires are successful, Dabo's essentially developed a way to overcome instability caused by yearly coaching switches. In the future departures will matter a lot less for exactly the same reason it matters a lot less for Alabama: because we'll have proven we overcome it.

In the short term it's obviously costing us. Recruits bolted on us this transition, especially defensive recruits. The Venables name was huge. And promoting coordinators who are so unproven is always a risk. But if it works, in the long run, Dabo and Clemson will have established that the frenzied instability engulfing the rest of college football does not apply to us, and we'll still be Clemson, driving in our lane, doing our own thing our own way.

Will it work? I dunno. I think a lot of that has to do with how the new coordinators turn out. One thing I noted: our new coordinators are significantly cheaper than the guys they replaced, so that frees up a lot of cheddar for analysts. Unlike Saban, we don't need to run a coaching rehab clinic for ex-head-coaches looking to resurrect their careers...what we need, especially with position coaches and coordinators so young, are gurus...guys who have been around the block, have x's and o's sophistication, and the ability to tutor and develop these younger and less-experienced coordinators. I really like the idea of bringing, say, David Cutcliffe on staff to mentor Streeter. Combine Streeter's relative youth, hunger, and energy with Cutcliff's knowledge base and experience, and I feel just way better about Streeter's chances of being successful.

My suspicion is, this is Dabo's approach going forwards. Grow his coaches in-house, backstop them with external analysts, insulate Clemson from turnover while at the same time limiting it. I think it's how he intends to get through not just this year's coaching changes, but with future ones as well.

We'll see how it works. As usual, with Dabo, it's not how everyone else is doing it. Which means it may well be successful.

Appreciate the candid thoughts in this forum without the sanctimonious criticism of anyone who dares to think outside of the "herd-think" mentality which too often happens, here.

That was a great read, @quozzel. Logical, thoughtful, and reasoned.

Do post more.

I was with you right up till Cutclifff. I don’t have anything against him I just think your selling Streeter short.
He is not some young wet behind the ears guy!
He is a man with a proven track record and a great hire for anyone.
He is the mentor and not the grasshopper!

Bringing Cutcliffe in has little to do with Streeter. It is about using his experience to polish the Offense which is something most have stated we needed to do immediately. It would also serve to entice a certain recruit with the last name of Manning.

Just responding to the quote!
Either way you seem to believe that Streeter can’t get the job done.

No, I don't think that's what jstone is saying at all. Just like Q said, it's an excellent model. Dabo's been doing it since he became coach. It's just now, you can afford bigger and better.

Nothing to do with Street not doing a job. Just like I think he may bring in adazio to help with the defense. No knock on hires.

I don't think Q was endorsing Cutcliffe, just using the name as an example.

Saban model of coaching hires works out. I would never bet against Dabo as he loves proving the naysayers wrong.

Dabo likes to use George Washington Carver's quote of "when you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world." Dabo's model of growing coaches internally may very well be another example of this.

I too would like to see Dabo bring David Cutcliff on as an analyst. Cutcliff has a great mind for football and would be great resource for some our younger coaches to commune with.

Dabo always plays the long game... but right now it is mid-season on the coordinator hires.

Goodwin and Conn were brought in at the end of the Watson years. At this time BV and even TE/JS were being named as "options" in the coaching circles. Dabo was pulling in who he wanted before it got crazy. He hired replacements back then. He knew change was going to hit so he wanted to have the talent
"in house". Even Streeter was following Scott's path.

So, just curious quozzel. Dabo's obviously been adopting said strategy all along. But imo, CBV was/is (we'll see) an excellent recruiter. So you had to ride that horse.

The way I interpret what you're saying then, he can still use the CBV attraction because it's his acolytes. The scheme won't change. Tweaking obviously, but just like the Morris principal, TE and js were able to recruit off that until obviously they got established by name. So will Wes and Conn. Conn being established now.

Correct? Off base? It's worked so far. May be bumpy but next year can go a long way. Imo, Streeter has enough cred to recruit the offense. Who steps in for CBV... Recruiting wise I mean? Tia

Great post as always. You know that.

I think having Chad Morris interview for every job that

opened up, whether it was good or not, had a bit to do with it too. He was openly campaigning for other jobs the past couple of years that he was here and other schools used it against us by telling kids that the coach was leaving, it was only a matter of when he would get offered one of the jobs.

A good read,

but a lot are overlooking he has been doing this for years with his staff. TE & JS for example.

Now they are head coaches of major programs. Not a coincidence.

Why can't you train your own people instead of chasing someone else's? What you need is a solid staff that is willing to learn and adapt to the latest strategies. There are so many people who can run copycat schemes out there, it doesn't require you to be the originator. But my worry is that by relying on training from within, are you closing your program to true adaptation?

Great analysis and I certainly hope Dabo’s strategy pays off.

I don’t have a problem with promoting from within per se. I’m just concerned with how abysmal our passing game was this year and how dependent it was on extraordinary quarterback and wide receiver play in the years before. You don’t have to be a football savant to see that we rarely have receivers running wide-open, while plenty of other teams do. Our route and read system is in serious need of an upgrade. It’s difficult to see how Streeter, who was the passing game coordinator, would be a good choice for making the needed upgrade.

But, hopefully, The Streeter and Richardson combo will be hungry and open to innovation. And, really, it’s not even innovation, it’s just copying what the good all fences are already doing these days.
