if you’re invested in index funds that track the S&P you’ve officially had 7 months of gains wiped out, solely because of Trump’s ultimately pointless and inflationary tariff threats. Trump’s trade policy uncertainty is economic cancer, and his campaign promise to address cost of living was thrown straight out the window.

I look forward to hearing about how happy Trump supporters are to be losing money and how this shift from 20%+ annual gains straight into a bear market is a good thing.

Maybe President No Wars will bomb Iran the same day. I'm guessing in about a year it might be a good time to put some cash to use. Probably, at that point we'll end up with those lower interest rates King Looney Tune so desperately wants.

Market downturns are never fun for anyone. But did you honestly think 20% returns were going to continue indefinitely? Does history teach you that? I’m not going to debate all the why reasons for the current decline and yes, markets are spooked right now. But thinking we just have double digit returns with no corrections is just not realistic.

Apparently, setting Tariff policies at 1 AM on Truth Social and maybe or maybe not backing off them seems erratic and spooks rationally minded institutional traders that drive the market.

But hey, once we have a full blown trade war with the rest of the world, are at full on war in the middle east, have made Canada and Red, White, and Blue land number 51 and 52 we will be great again as a country and I believe it will be smooth sailing in Trump's 3rd term.

I have about $22K in Wal-Mart as one of the conservative-side anchors on my barbell strategy - the wild half is mostly invested in Oklo because it'll make something like 100x if I'm right about what it is, but if you're going to invest in a moonshot, I say, shoot for the moon, baby! - and even freakin' Wal-Mart has taken a beating. I mean, this has historically been one of the safest and most boring stocks on Planet Earth, with steady gains going back to 1972, and it peaked at an all-time high of $105.01 back in December.

It's down to $86.36 as of five minutes ago. And this is a stock that's supposed to get better when recessions hit because everybody tightens their belt and buys cheaper, and two-thirds of their supply chain is American. But I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a "safe" stock anymore with the Twitchy Tariffer's tiny-tiny hands rabbit-punching random tariff buttons because it's going to hammer even the low-end retail.

If somebody's got a play other than "ride it out, and hope a piece of SkyLab lands on him", I'd love to hear it. You know, from the people who actually invest.

Here is a 5 year trend

Notice anything? Personally about a year ago I started shifting from Stocks to Bonds. A couple of weeks ago, I started shifting back. Little jumps not big jumps. My investment strategy on stocks is more conservative than the S&P. Downs don't hurt as much and ups are as good.

Protectionism and raising taxes has historically been a democrat thing. Although they would rather raise taxes on American corporations than tariffs. The short term results are similar. Long term with this help American companies and American jobs? We'll see.

Apparently you had to sell in a bear market. That's too bad. It seems like a buying opportunity to me because of how strong some of the rest of the economy is.

Maybe we can get a President in there that will give us 20% gains every year forever. Not likely.

Do you think a Harris presidency would have given us 4 years of 20% gains? Is inflation part of your analysis? What is better 2% inflation and a 10% rise in the S&P or 10% inflation with a 20% rise in the S&P.

No. That’s not what I’m saying, that’s not what anyone’s saying. I’m drawing a distinction between the factors in the market leading to record gains and the sudden reversal of the trend. Nobody is arguing about historic market trends, or about a “stocks only go up” investing strategy (which I too believe in).

Look, I understand why you’re taking the position about this, I get it. But I don’t think you need to feign being thrilled about going from pushing ATH’s on a daily basis to everyone being back where we were last summer. This is not an organic correction, this has been brought about by policy decisions, and it has cost you, and me, and everyone else participating in the market economy money. You don’t have to be ok with that just because it’ll probably get better.

I agree that the current political decisions are causing disruptions. But the market was overheated and a correction was coming this year regardless. Will we be better on the back side of this? Time will tell but history and my 4 decades in the market makes me refuse to worry about it.

Exactly!! Let them all panic. Just look the the market today. Down really bad this morning and they all start barking about the end of the world. Market then rebounds in the afternoon. Why is that? Nothing but knee jerk from the undisciplined. They panic and sell then real investors laugh at them and buy stocks on sale. Rinse and repeat throughout market history and future.
