Breaking Camp Part II
All indications show that this has been a successful pre-season camp for the Tigers, but some questions still remain with less than two weeks before Clemson heads to Athens.
Here are a few questions that need to be answered on the defensive side of the ball in the next two weeks:
Fourth Defensive End in Athens
The suspension of Corey Crawford
Corey Crawford
Sr. Defensive End
#93 6-5, 276
Columbus, GA
View Full Profile is an issue from a depth standpoint as the Tigers enter the season opener in Athens. When Crawford returns from his one game suspension the Tigers will be two-deep at defensive end and should have one of the nation's best groups of defensive ends in the country. However most staffs would like to play four defensive ends especially if the weather means fatigue could be a factor. Vic Beasley

View Full Profile any closer to playing? Perhaps Beasley, Lawson and Barnes won’t need much help, but I would think a few snaps from the fourth defensive end would make the trio fresher in the critical fourth quarter.
Defensive Tackle Rotation
It is no secret Grady Jarrett

View Full Profile is the best option at defensive tackle. There is also little concern over the depth here. Clemson will be able to go six deep with its defensive tackles Jarrett, DeShawn Williams

View Full Profile. The question isn’t depth but snaps. Who will get the start along with Jarrett and how will the snaps be divided among this deep and talented group?
SAM/Nickel
Perhaps the biggest question mark still unresolved is the SAM/nickel spot. My guess is that the Tigers' base will be the nickel and Travis Blanks

Jr. Safety
#11 6-0, 210
Tallahassee, FL

View Full Profile will get a majority of the snaps. Blanks will return to his natural position but he has had inflammation in his surgically repaired knee this fall. This is a high character leader on defense who will be needed, but he still has a red-shirt option if the knee does not respond. The good news is Wiggins played a lot last year and the staff is comfortable with him starting. In terms of the SAM position, T.J. Burrell

Who is the starter at free safety?
This is perhaps the biggest surprise of the camp. Going into camp I thought Jayron Kearse

View Full Profile has been impressive. Johnson has a great knowledge of the defense and that is very important at this position. Johnson's pick six in Saturday's scrimmage was further evidence that he is making a move and it would not surprise me if he grabs more snaps as the season progresses.
