Swinney disagrees with Brownell: I am a scorer, not a chucker

CLEMSON – Head football coach Dabo Swinney begs to differ with head basketball coach Brad Brownell. Swinney says he’s not a chucker, he’s a scorer.

Brownell was asked about Swinney’s basketball abilities during a NCAA Tournament press conference, and Brownell didn’t hold back, saying Swinney is a “chucker” or someone who hogs the basketball and shoots all the time.

"Coach Swinney does show up and play basketball. He's not there all the time. He has other things to do. He shows up in the offseason," Brownell said in San Diego. “He's a chucker. He's going to get his shots up and there is really nobody in the gym unless I'm there that is going to tell him he's shot too much. Most of the guys he's playing are GAs and assistants or other people in the athletic department that are scared of him. I joke, but he does love basketball. He was a high school player, and he was a good player in high school."

Swinney told the media Monday that Brownell needs to change his terminology.

“If being a scorer means chucker, then guilty as charged,” Swinney said with a laugh. “I want my team to win and usually, that requires me to score. I am just sayin'. I guess I am guilty as charged. I did lead my county in shots attempted a couple of years in a row there, but I prefer to see myself as a scorer. I don't know where this chucker stuff came from. He needs to get his butt out there on the court a little bit more before he starts evaluating my game.”

Brownell also said that Swinney doesn’t care about rebounding or playing defense, and once again Swinney disagreed.

“Absolutely not. I play defense. I pride myself on defense,” he said. “I ripped my hand right there (showing an injury to his palm). We were down on a trip last week with two other couples to Turks and Caicos Wednesday to Sunday, and me and my buddy were jogging outside of the resort. We come up on a basketball game. It's just a bunch of locals out there playing basketball and we busted right up in there.

“Two hours later (wife Kathleen) Kath and them think we've been kidnapped or something. It was a blast. We had a great time. There was a sport court, and I got knocked down because I was playing defense. I slid across there and ripped the skin off. I had some pain but I kept playing. I had a heck of a time. They had no clue who we were. We were just the tourists showing up.”
