Lee says Williams probably won't catch again this season

by - Senior Writer -

Clemson head coach Monte Lee said at the press conference for the Clemson Regional that Chris Williams will not catch this weekend and most likely for the rest of the season.

"He's going to be in a position where can pinch-hit or DH, probably for the rest of the year," Lee said. "His arm is not in a position to be able to throw, to where he can get back there and compete as a catcher. But he could DH and he can pinch-hit some, so that's where he's at."

Lee said Williams will be hard for the Tigers to replace.

"Yes, it's a big loss," Lee said. "Anybody will tell you that if you have a catcher with that kind of power, there are very few catchers across the country that have the kind of power Chris Williams has. He hit in the middle of our order all year. This guy also came off of a hamate (bone) injury at the beginning of the season. He's had two injuries now this year, and he put up some monster numbers for us. It hurts. He is a guy that can leave the ballpark at any point and time, but he is such a great kid, too. Everybody loves Chris Williams because he plays the game like a little kid. We miss his energy and his bat and his ability in the lineup and in the field for sure, but that's not an excuse. We have to move on."
