The next Jeff Davis?

Could the next Jeff Davis be ready to burst on the scene out of Greensboro’s Dudley High School?

Davis arrived on the Clemson campus out of Dudley High School and fashioned an incredible career that included a national championship and an induction into Clemson’s Ring of Honor.

He was the captain of Clemson's 1981 National Championship team, and was a first-team All-American in 1981 when he led the Tigers in tackles. Davis was also named MVP of the ACC and was the defensive MVP of the Orange Bowl victory over Nebraska, the game that clinched the national title for the Tigers.

Davis has the third best mark in career tackles in Clemson history and has also caused the most fumbles and recovered the most fumbles in team history.

“I really didn’t know much about him before I went down there,” Register told TigerNet. “But when I got down there that is all I heard. They wanted him me to meet me. They were telling me that I could be better than he was. A lot of the coaches were telling me I needed to be better than he was.”

“It was great to meet him,” he said. “We talked for a while, just me and him. He is a great person, real straightforward with what he said. He said it like a mentor would. Now I want to find some film of him and watch it.”

“I enjoyed it,” he said. “I felt really comfortable at Clemson. It was a great experience. I like the coaches, and just the nature of the whole place. It is just a natural feeling there. It is spacious and quiet, a lot like where I live now.”

“He is a really good guy,” he said. “One thing I really like about him is that when he speaks to me, he looks me dead in the eyes. He is really trustworthy. I would love to play under a coach like that. We sat and talked for a long time, and I felt really comfortable with him.”

He also enjoyed the little bit of time he spent with Swinney.

“He is like a father figure,” Register said. “He had his children running around the camps. He is really laid back.”

Register currently has offers from Clemson and Indiana, but has been getting interest from Alabama and North Carolina. As of right now, however, Clemson is the leader.

“I like Clemson the best, and then Alabama and South Carolina,” he said. “I am going to go to both Alabama and South Carolina before the end of the summer, and I want to wait to make a decision until either the end of my junior year or during my senior year.”

As a sophomore, Register had 89 tackles, 8.5 sacks, two interceptions, six pass breakups and three forced fumbles in nine games
