A weekend visit to Clemson made quite an impression for one of the region’s top defensive end prospects in the 2017 recruiting cycle.

of Forsyth (GA) Mary Persons spent time on the Clemson campus last Saturday, and he tells TigerNet the visit was one he had been wanting to make for a while.

“The reason I took the visit was because I haven't been to Clemson to visit like that,” Herring said. “I just wanted to go back a second time and see how everything was going. I had been planning to make a visit all summer and it was the right time.”

Herring has offers from the region’s top football programs, including Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, Florida, Florida St., Georgia and Tennessee. However, it was Clemson’s academic side that made the biggest impression Saturday.

“It was a great visit. I really loved the academic center,” Herring said. “That was really one of the best things about the whole visit. There were only two coaches because the rest of the coaches were on vacation. But it was still a great visit. The academic side really got me. I also got to spend time with one of the strength coaches who works with the defensive linemen (get-back coach Adam Smotherman) and he impressed me a lot. The campus is looking great. There is a lot of construction going on there right now. But once they get all of that done Clemson will be beautiful.”

Herring says he plans on being back for two of Clemson’s home games – Oct. 3rd against the Fighting Irish and in November when the Tigers host Florida St.

“I am planning on coming back for a visit when they play Notre Dame and probably Florida St.,” Herring said. “If I don't get to visit both of those games, I will definitely make one of them.”

Auburn, Clemson and Alabama have long been rumored to be Herring’s top three choices, but he said he isn’t in a rush to name any favorites.

“I am not in a rush to make a decision,” he said. “I just have to weigh my options and see what is best for me. I am not in a rush to make a top five or anything like that. With that being said, everything right now is equal for me.”

, who tells Herring he would be a perfect fit for Clemson’s defensive scheme.

“With Coach Hobby, our bond gets better every time we talk,” Herring said. “I love talking to him. He is a great guy. He is not just a coach, he is a mentor to me. I think I am a good fit for Clemson's defense, especially with what they are doing with Shaq Lawson and what they did with Vic Beasley. I just see myself fitting in there the way they use those players.”

Herring had 30 tackles and four sacks as a sophomore.
