After Potter's big week, Tigers now have three commits rated best at their position |
Clemson’s 2018 recruiting class can now say it has the distinction of having three of the nation’s top players at their respective positions committed after kicker B.T. Potter shot to the top of the rankings following a camp last week.
The Tigers have secured commitments from quarterback Trevor Lawrence and defensive end Xavier Thomas for 2018. Both players are regarded by many recruiting services as the top player at their position nationally, but the recruiting services don’t pay a lot of attention to the specialists, but veteran kicking coach Chris Sailer does and he invited the nation’s best to a camp in Tampa. That included Potter. “We had a camp a few weeks ago at my high school for the Army All-American Game, and I did pretty good and I got in the game,” Potter told TigerNet. “I was thinking I was going to be done for the summer, but then I got invited to a camp in Orlando and then Chris Sailer, he texted me and said there was an opening at a camp in Tampa.” According to Sailer’s website, the TOP 12 camp features 45 of the top kickers in the country. Forty of those participated in Sailer’s Vegas kicking camps and earned invites and Sailer threw out five wild card invitations. Potter earned his invitation last January and originally thought he couldn't make it but found the time at the last minute to make the trip. He entered the competition as the number three kicker on the board but left on top. “I got down there and went to his TOP 12 camp. I got to go against the number one ranked guy, and I was number three going into the camp,” Potter said. “Going into the second day he moved me to number two, and then the last day I beat the number one guy. My ranking stayed at two, but then a couple of days ago I looked on Twitter at the Top 12 recap and it said I was the number one ranked guy.” Sailer said Potter deserves the ranking. “The Clemson commit is the real deal. He dominates at every aspect of the game and is ready for any and all challenges ahead,” Sailer said. “B.T. was recently selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and he is now your new #1 kicker in the nation.” Potter says the ranking is a dream come true. “It's awesome. I have been working for this spot for a few years,” he said. “It's something I've always wanted and it is amazing to have it.” Potter spent last Friday at the All In Cookout with several of his future teammates, and the trip confirmed that Clemson is home. “It was great. It feels like home. Everybody is so happy there. It really feels like a family,” Potter said. “The home run derby and putting on the uniforms were the best parts. I like putting on the uniform because that tells us what it will be like on game day in a few years when we get to suit up.” All the hard work has paid off!! Extremely blessed to be ranked 1st in the world. #dreamchasing pic.twitter.com/dgB756MFmo
