I watch for entertainment and enjoy the spirit of competition. Sadly, there's the occasional competition where it's clear watching any further will prove upsetting...and that's not for me.
With 2-3 minutes left in the first half, there hadn't been a half-dozen whistles, despite a lot of contact both ways. Within five minutes of the 2nd half, I wasn't sure who the game was for, but it clearly didn't seem it was about the players.
With 12 minutes remaining, I called it a night. Yes, I wanted Clemson to win...definitely. But, I had no sense the outcome of the game was in the hands of the players and didn't want to witness the outcome.
I've officiated before...a number of years. The competition is for the players...we're there to assist within the rules/laws/what have you. Unfortunately, I've observed or worked with officials who felt they were a notch above...and that seldom ended well.
Friday night didn't end well...and I'm glad to have missed it.
