Win or loss, what’s the most frustrated Clemson game

May 19, 2019, 2:17 PM

You’ve watched? Mine would be NCST 2016. I was so mad during that game. I remember leaving the house at one point to go cool off, just couldn’t handle watching all the turnovers.

Very hard watching that unfold. Never forgiven Deion Sanders for that punt return. The rooskie was like a waking nightmare. What a smash mouth, strength vs. strength game. Very entertaining but a hard one to swallow.

OMG, that is an easy one for me.

2012 Orange Bowl vs. West Virginia.

My brother-in-law had hooked me up with some of the game's merchandise, including a knit cap and long sleeve t-shirt, for Christmas. I went to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch it with friends and had a table of Mountaineer fans right next to us. The turnovers and questionable calls in the first half were driving me crazy.

I left the place at halftime and watched the rest at home. Never wore the shirt again, however my daughter likes to wear it around the house nowadays. I was able to remove the Orange Bowl emblem from the hat and still wear it with the Paw on it.

Been a fan since 1981 and that is the lowest I've felt as a Tiger football fan. I'd have to say right now is the highest though.

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You've got a taste for how we felt being at that game . . .

May 19, 2019, 3:10 PM

With an 8-9 hour drive home to Charleston, SC (to get my sister home to her doctor's appointment with her oncologist) staring us in the face . . . We endured through most of the third quarter before heading North.

Thankfully she made it to a few games in the fall of 2013 and graduated this earth seeing her Tigers win her final attended game . . . but that night, next to Cuba, was unbearable.

For me, there are 2 losses. First, the big loss was the WV runaway train in the Orange Bowl. Went down for the game and the feeling was terrible. Then had to go back to work in Chicago and listen to another obnoxious WV fan.

Second, the close loss, was the Pittsburgh game in DV. The D could just not stop their offense (the Tiger offense turning the ball over didn't help) and especially the inside shuttle pass to the TE. I had nightmares about that pass for weeks.

Wasn't that our Military Appreciation Day for the year?

My sister was in the early stages of her battle with cancer and begged me to take her to this game. She was fresh off of having her mastectomy, she was even sporting a wound pump to the game!!!

Other than losing badly, there are three remembrances from that event:
1) my first introduction to those dammmmed gingling keys on third down
2) as my sis and I walked across Bowman Field from downtown, a helicopter took off so close to us, it blew my sis into a magnolia tree as it startled her
3) attending that game was a last minute decision, I picked up tickets late . . . they were about 1/2 way up the North Stands Upper Deck . . . My sis swore until the day she graduated, that the "fly over" that day was below our eye level!!!

Even in that loss, I have fond memories!!!

I have 3 that stand out as far as games I was at.
I can’t remember the years
At home vs TCU a game we should have won in a monsoon
At GT , when they went up like 24-3 and we are driving late to take the lead. Then boom a BS holding call that lost us the game.
The game VS GT , we were winning by 10 with about 3-4 mins to go and lost.

Came here to mention TCU. The horseshoe they had that day was something else. Remember TCU getting a touchdown after the pass broken was broken up and it bounced around before finally landing square in the chest of a TCU receiver who was flat on his back in the end zone and I swear had no idea where the ball was.

Could be slightly off, but remember there being 2 TDs that we’re “You got to be kidding me”.

The play before that 60-yard attempt was a 5-yard sideline completion to a running back I believe that was called incomplete by the hometown Georgia tech refs. I think we go on to win that game is not for that call.

Kevin Steele is the single most terrible defensive coordinator in history. Our linebackers looked like they had NO clue what to do that night. Then he goes out and puts up that defense vs WVU. I don't see how he is employed by anyone but coach mac. He's lucky he landed a job in the SEC, where the players are way too dumb to run anything complex on offense.

1984 Coot game in Death Valley. We were dominating them 21-3 with seconds left in the first half when the coots attempted a FG inside our 10 yard line.....we 'roughed' their kicker, giving them a first down and they scored to make it 21-10 at the half.
Second half was a completely different game. Our senior QB got sacked (IN OUR ENDZONE) after managing to 'scramble' for a 17 yard loss....(I still don't think Eppley knew he was in our endzone when they finally tackled him).
Later in the 2nd half we proceed to throw an interception (ball deflected off Flagler's hands), coots get a FG and then the coots scored another TD.....to beat us 22-21. We never scored in the 2nd half after dominating them in the 1st half. TOTAL HUMILIATION.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Win or loss, what’s the most frustrated Clemson game

May 19, 2019, 8:17 PM

That one is also the top of my list. I knew we had a much better team, and the first half was proving that to be true. That score they made before the first half ended was extremely frustrating. They scored on a trap play right up the middle, if I recall correctly.

And that started a momentum swing in the 2nd half where they crawled back into the game... and pulled the rabbit out of the hat. William Perry should have drilled Mike Hold into the ground before he had the chance to do that "roll the ball" stunk that they put on T-shirts (what losers).

That was my senior year -- would have been nice not to lose them during my four years in school. :(

Just from sheer frustration, it is the 2018 game with the coots. Wanted nothing more than for our guys to bury them then spit on the grave. But somehow they kept scoring. while the game was never (and I mean NEVER) in doubt, seeing them score 35 was hard to take.

In the eighties - when we lost to UGA in the last second when a guy named Butler kicked a 61 yard field goal! Our Treadwell kicked a FG the next year to beat them (at the end). Y'all check me out on this.

That's the game Danny Ford came on to the field in the 4th quarter and chewed the refs out. He started off with, "I saw that SOB in the 1 st quarter.." before the TV broadcast cut the audio. That was the day I became a Clemson fan, impressionable 10 year old.

Fairly young Clemson fan here...

-2015 Natty vs. Alabama: Deshaun played out of his mind, and we had the game won, if 2 certain safeties would’ve shown up for just a single play that night

-2014 @ Florida State: Another game we had won, on the road, against the #1 team in the country. Mac’s slip and fall and Davidson’s fumble haunt me to this day

-2013 @ South Carolina: Adam Humphries couldn’t field a punt that night to save his life

-2009 ACC Champ vs. Georgia Tech: Ooh this one made me pull my hair out. CJ set the rushing yard record in the ACC title game, but watching Kevin Steele’s defense try and stop the option that night was something out of a nightmare

-2010 @ Auburn: Up 17-0 at half against Cam Newton and a future championship team, and we just fell apart in the 2nd half, but we still had a chance. Watching Parker miss a wide open man in the end zone to win it, and Cat Man make a field goal, only to be flagged, and miss the next one, hurts to this day

-2017 @ Syracuse: recency bias, but omg, watching Kelly limp around on the field while a healthy Hunter Johnson sat on the sideline...

2007 Boston College. Win and you are in the ACC championship game.

I was driving from Fort Collins to Moab that night for my vacation and had a friend at the game give me details. Hated hearing how it went.

2013 Uofsuck, that game sucks..

another 2007 game is the peach bowl against Auburn. Tommy just couldn't do #### to motivate a team. We could have won 10 games that year but noooo he just had to have us lose a close one to an Auburn team with a brand new Offensive Coordinator.

About every GT game up until 2012. Those all were just heart breakers including 2011 when they stopped our 8-0 run.

Streeter threw that bomb to Wofford for a TD early in the 4th to take the lead. Later, the crowd is begging Tommy West to call a timeout on a late game drive, which he decides he'll redeem the timeouts for a six pack after, and we run out of time to try to win.

2012 Orange Bowl game against WVU, where the D was completely confused and we got 70 hung on us.

2004 GT game at home; lots of ways to win, make first down, punt the football, stop GT on next posession. Couldnt do any of the above, lose to Reggie Ball and Calvin Johnson.

2017 syracuse was really frustrating. Drive after drive i'm just thinking that it is Hunter Johnson's turn to come in and turn the game around. I think he only ended up getting a couple of drives while Cooper got the majority and just didn't do anything with the ball. I think that game might have been a contributing factor in him transferring.

1984 - UGA ... Not sure if anyone has mentioned this one. We were leading comfortably in the second half - and IIRC - Epley pitched the ball back to a Georgia defense man who was inexplicably trailing the play - resulting in a turnover that turned the game around. And then - Butler made the impossible field goal to decide the game. This was beyond frustrating!!
