Lawn Mower Chronicles, Chapter 4: The Nuclear Option

Dear readers, I think we are about to arrive at the end of our tale. Then again, I've said those words before. However, before we dive into the latest update, let me catch you up on where we started:
Order #1: Ordered a Makita. Failed to ship after a week of waiting because of a system error with Home Depot. Order #2: Failed to deliver after a week because it was damaged during shipping. Order #3: Delivered, but the mower didn't have the battery life I needed and may have been defective. Order #4: Ordered a Honda HRX217HYA. Delivered damaged, and had to return. Order #5: Arrived. Good condition except missing air filter cover. Five minutes into the first run, the engine starts smoking (and not just burning off what may be on the engine from production), and the blades stop engaging. After flipping it over, it looked like the blades got seized up on a clump of grass and it smoked the BBC or something in it. Returned.
That brings us to where are now.
I was in a pickle. The vast majority of recommendations for push mowers were the Honda HRX, which I had just smoked, or the Toro Super Recycler. I was hesitant to give the Honda another shot because a) I just killed one doing very basic stuff, and I started seeing with deeper research more complaints about motors going bad and Honda voiding warranties. For the Toro with the B&S motors, there were a litany of complaints about engine sputtering and B&S not really having a fix for it.
My mobile lawn mower repair guy said the Toros with Kawasaki motors were solid, but I could not find them anywhere.
But then...I (hopefullly) struck gold by coming across the Scag SFC21. It's a true commercial grade mower, with an model that had a 7hp Kohler motor on it. And, as it turns out, there is a Scag dealer in Pineville and they had one available. Better yet, it was a demo model, and saved me about 20%.
This thing is an effing beast. 21" commercial-grade steel deck that looks like it could kill a Russian tank. I'm thinking this, and the spool of trimmer string Obed® recommended and joked would still be around for my son to inherit, will actually go to him when I die.

I need to change out the oil and then I'll get it into the yard, and report back.
But, fingers crossed, I'm at the end of the journey here.

although probably not that interesting, had a friend in high school that was.....a little weird? Whenever she or whoever she was riding with put gas in their car, she would get a napkin and catch the few little drops that come out when you take the nozzle out of the tank, and take it with her so she could sniff it until the smell went away.
Went to Clemson, then moved to Colorado, and dropped off the face of the earth.

It's a $1500 push mower thanks to the demo discount.
But to your point, the budget mowers won't work for me. With the slope of my yard, it has to have self-propulsion, which adds cost. And, with my bermuda, that sometimes goes for two weeks without cutting, I have to have a bigger motor or they get hung up and it adds an ungodly amount of time because I can't cut the width of the mower with each pass. I also wanted something that can mulch really well because if I bag, I have to stop and unload each circle, which again, adds an ungodly amount of time to a mow.
If I was retired, and could mow twice a week, a budget mower would probably work. But, I have limited windows of when I can mow, and if it gets into the two-week time period, the thic bermuda is a nightmare.

So even with a premium mower, if I don't bag and try to mulch, it looks like dogshiz.

you are cutting it too short.
What is your height setting? Anything below 4 inches just stimulates side growth and thatching. 5 is better. TWSS

But bermuda should be at around 2 inches or so. Better for the grass and the little dude to play in the back yard.

It's going to scalp like that (and clump up/not mulch well) if you mow it with a $200,000 solid gold, diamond-decorated sheik of Arabia mower.
Once a week, 10 days tops was my Bermuda mowing schedule. I also have centipede grass now for a reason

But between needing 2x the water, like 4x the fertilizer, sandy soil, yada yada, it was a MAJOR PITA.
If you have the time and the money, it is the prettiest grass. If you're a normal working person who can't afford a Japanese gardner, or a weekly lawn service, then well.....
Plebe I am.

Second of all, when I moved into my house I was gifted a used Lawn Boy mower. I never heard of this brand and assumed it's a pizza shed. Well ###n if it doesn't fire up every time, year after year, with zero maintenance. I'm not sure if we ever even put gas in it. It's going to outlive us all.

I mow my grass with a $100 I want to say Toro? That I got at a Lowe’s on James Island in 2014. Once every couple years I have to disassemble the carburetor, clean it out, and put it back together. I have never put oil in it. I’m pretty sure I’m down to a cost per mow somewhere in the range of about $0.02-0.03.

Except it was $89.99 from Walmart in 2012. Never done a thing to it, use it like a bush hog, never stop to pick anything up and mow right over anything in its way, and use it on a yard that makes the Vietnamese jungle look like Augusta National.

Your grass is now 12 inches high because it’s been so long since you’ve had a mower.
You’ve now sent back a couple mowers because they struggle with grass that’s 12 inches high.
You’ve now bought a veritable bush hog, which will handle this 12 inches high high grass, and take it down to a level the other mowers could have dealt with.

My forester swears by these fast-growing genetically modified pine trees. Says you can plant them and by year 15ish they're ripe for a clearcut.
Oh, with at least 2 thinnings in between. Own 500 acres, you can rotate clearcuts replanting these and then rotate the thinnings and clear cuts, in 10x 50-acre segments (or 5x 100 acre plots), and you can get a pretty steady extra income.
