As coaches they thought they had already taken a chance at overextending him when he came back for the 2nd inning.

2-out base hit. Closer warmed up. Eh, let’s not risk it further. Better to let the guy just coming off injury take a seat, and let the warmed up closer come in with two outs and slam the door and close the game. That coaching rational makes sense. Unfortunately it didn’t work out.
