Sure, games may still be lopsided ahead 'cause football, but it's hard to argue that the 12-team format ultimately didn't place the best of the bunch into the Semis this season. AZ State at #4 had a chance and had they ultimately won vs Texas I'd say the same thing.

Like it or not this format delivered, and I really don't see any reason to expand ahead other than pure greed. For the first two out and the butthurt for not making the cut - don't let one of your 3 losses be to a bad KY team at home and don't get blown out by a .500 team that couldn't even beat Navy.

Seeing both Big 2 conference champions lose also reinforces the argument behind ensuring at least 5 conference champions do make it in. It's a solid check on conference bias, and by the end the cream, regardless of conference or no, will rise to the top.
