administration but the decline was starting with Davis. We've found no solution since and not sure that we will. Not sure the setting or the support is there to make this program successful so it would really take someone special that can create something for women b-ballers to want to be a part of. Besides, in women's hoops, there is UCONN and then there is everyone else. There are 15-20 programs that treat it seriously and do well a tier below but the interest and talent pool just isn't there to do anything beyond. Double down on softball or some other women's sport if you ask me.

Mar 27, 2018, 4:47 PM

I don't follow women's sports at all, but I do like women's softball, and I'm glad we finally have a women's softball program. If what you have said about the women's Basketball program is fact, then maybe we should do away with the women's Basketball program, and I wouldn't care one way or another. Is women's Basketball in the ACC as tough as it is with the men's ACC basketball, bc I really don't know?

Mar 28, 2018, 9:18 AM [ in reply to Let it go-- it was time for Davis to go.....wasn't even this ]

disagree that it was "time for Davis to go" ...

I think Davis' ousting was politically motivated and the slump he was going through (after actually winning an ACC title) just opened the door for gender-based politics to drive the situation.

There is no doubt whatsoever that three successive female head coaches have not been able to improve on, let alone duplicate the success that Jim Davis had with the Clemson program.

Hope no effect on AJ, think he will turn into a great player for us. Also I think a possible candidate should be the women’s coach at Lander, Kevin Pederson. Alum of Clemson and has had one of the most consistent programs in the state besides USuC. Definitely an out of the box candidate being at a D2 school but I think he should be looked at. Mar 27, 2018, 10:25 PM [ in reply to He will tranfer*** ]

his transfer options are pretty limited. he has all ready taken a RS year, so his 'sit out' year would be lost. by the time he got eligible (the 2019-20 season)... he would only have 2 to play 2. he could transfer all the way down to a PC/newberry level school without sitting or he could possibly go JUCO for a year, then look to come back to D1,again with 2 to play 2.

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He will tranfer***

Mar 31, 2018, 2:01 AM

If he transfers bc his mom was let go, then why should we be concerned where he goes or how much time he would have to play. He should man up and stay at Clemson bc the golden rule rule has always been with with head coaches is, if a HC can't move the program forward and win at least 50% of their games, for the school and for the athletes, they must be replaced with someone who can move the program forward. He knows that and he should accept that like an adult and not like a temper tantrum child even if the HC let go is the mom. That is the nature of the business just as if he never got good enough to take the floor at Clemson, he would remain on the bench. The name of the business is win or be replaced!!! As cruel as it maybe in peoples lives, that's the way it's forever been and will always be. So if AJ decides to transfer bc his mom was let go, that is his choice, and we shouldn't concern our selves about him once he walks out the door. It is his choice, and I personally hope that he makes the best choice for himself with a clear mind and heart, and I hope that is what his mom is saying to him also!!!!

Best of luck to Coach Smith on her future. She seemed classy and never brought any ill repute on Clemson, however she didn’t win enough sadly.

I hope DRad can make a big time hire. I’m not ashamed to say I care about WBB at Clemson.

Until recently, we had a really solid tradition. We still own the all-time series record vs Scar, thanks to the late, great Annie Tribble and Jim Davis. Scar had horrible years after the Pam Parsons scandal too. The only reason Scar has excelled at this recently (and really only this) and we have not has been because of coaching hires.

Now is the chance to get it right.

Re: Why not shut the program down, better than losing to coots every year***

Mar 27, 2018, 4:50 PM

Why the heck should Clemson take that attitude? You want to quit? DRad needs to demand the same degree of excellence no matter the program and fund each accordingly. We need a coach who creates an environment where players can excel.

While Coach Smith has two children coming to Clemson for their education I would hope both understand what was involved on a professional level. If Oliver transfers then Coach Brownell gets a slot. Frankly I have thought Spencer might do so, but now we need to hire a recruiter, coach and mentor all in one to resurrect this program after years of decline. We have the facilities and can compete given the right coach.

Go Tigers!

It was a poor hire to start with. I remember telling my son that this was an awful hire. No offense to her, however she was 128-128 at UAB. How can you hire a coach with that kind of record and expect them to improve in a much more difficult league like the ACC? This is on the AD hiring her. Good luck to her, Thanks for representing Clemson well while here.

Of course, we will still hear from those who haven't managed to get over Jim Davis getting "screwed" many years ago. Not sure why that is still a sore spot for so many, when the program was clearly declining under him, and most importantly, it's women's basketball which doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of college sports.

Nonetheless, we should strive to be competitive in every sport, and I hope our new hire will be a good one who brings some success to the Lady Tiger program. I always liked Audra Smith and felt that she was a good person who is a solid coach, but obviously couldn't get it done.

No, her son isn't going to transfer because she was fired.

Jim Davis at least could coach

Mar 27, 2018, 10:07 PM

We haven't had half the in-game coaching in any of the three coaches since Barb K-D decided that we needed more women's coaches in women's sports. Jim Davis's issue was that he couldn't recruit once the internet became a major part of recruiting. What he needed was a high quality assistant that knew how to recruit. Itoro U-C was that person for a bit, but something happened between Davis and Umoh-Coleman at some point that I'm still not clear about. If Jim Davis could have had the talent that U-C or Audra Smith were able to recruit, he would have coached them to a better record. Problem is he couldn't get that talent on his own. The Rice mistake couldn't recruit OR coach. U-C could recruit very well, but couldn't coach at all. AS did fair with recruiting and couldn't coach them up much.

I hope we can somehow manage to find someone who can both recruit AND coach. I'll take the chance with Kevin Pederson. Johnnie Harris from MS State would be a slam dunk hire. Dionnah Jackson-Durrett from MS State wouldn't be a bad hire either. Marisa Moseley from UConn is a good option too. It's a long shot, but I'd take Becky Hammon if we could get her in a heartbeat (Assistant Coach with San Antonio Spurs). Stephanie Norman from Louisville might be an option as would Samantha Williams. For head coaches that we might be able to get, Belmont's Bart Brooks could be an option. Marquette's Carolyn Kieger would be good, but she is at her alma mater.

After reviewing the possibilities, my list that I'd contact would be:
1) Johnnie Harris
2) Becky Hammon
3) Marisa Moseley

My fourth option would be Kevin Pederson and he's the highest one that I'm pretty sure would take the job if offered. So I'd try the first three and if they said no, I wouldn't hesitate to go after Pederson.

no way in hades that we would be able to get Becky Hammon - she was up for a men's coaching job at Colorado State and her salary wouldn't be matched by them as a men's coach... I actually thought she would get one more year to prove herself. She lost her leading scorer to injury even before the season started and another of her best players got injured early and missed a lot of the season. But those two things revealed how little depth we had. I like girls basketball and was impressed by the spirit and effort of her teams even in difficult times. But 9-70 in ACC play is unacceptable. I hope DRad has some indication that he can do better this time. I would have Jim Davis in the room during interviews if I was him.
