The illusion of Clemson domination

For years now Tiger fans and alumni have fondly argued that Clemson is dominating its instate rival where athletics are concerned. We have bought the fantasy, just like the Trumpers have bought into a fantasy that could irreparably damage our country. Here’s the deal. While we have dominated in football for the past decade or so, we have conveniently ignored the bigger picture. For example, USC now has two national titles in baseball. We have none, they have what amounts to two titles in womens basketball with a third very likely this year. A few years ago their mens basketball team advanced to the final four . When has our mens team ever done that? The answer is never. Yes, we recently won another soccer title and we’re good in golf, track etc. But it’s time to acknowledge the reality. USC is doing much better in intercollegiate athletics than our very insular fans are willing to concede. Except for football they are kicking to the curb presently in other major sports. In fact USC is getting better in football and is likely to make big gains on us o the next two or three years. A lot of energy has returned to that program. Are we sleeping on our football success? I hate to tell you, but the fragment is changing rapidly, and we’re yet to see if Dani’s more traditional approach can withstand the onslaught of unconventional and decidedly unethical attempts to dismantle the game we’ve always loved. This isn’t a mmm out student athlete freedom to choose their academic and athletic course in life. It’s about the greediness of some schools and their leaders to take advantage of the new “freedom” of student-athletes to hoodwink the young people for their own career benefit. Win at whatever cost, even if the students best interest isn’t factored into the new game of musical chairs. What about all those kids who find themselves stranded in the transfer portal with no way out? Something like crossing the event horizon on the promise of fame and adventure, only to find, too late, that there’s no way out. The gravitational force of college football and the jackals who tamper with the portal or pay players outright by exploiting the new rules is very powerful, and no one is willing now to fight back, to try to save the great game. Who really benefits from the new system ostensibly designed to free the student athletes to participate fully in our capitalist system and thus not be exploited for their talents? I think we know now who truly benefits. Dabo was right about the portal all along and the athletic press castigated him for it. Who’s gloating now?
