The illusion of Clemson domination

[3]
Feb 22, 2022, 8:30 AM

For years now Tiger fans and alumni have fondly argued that Clemson is dominating its instate rival where athletics are concerned. We have bought the fantasy, just like the Trumpers have bought into a fantasy that could irreparably damage our country. Here’s the deal. While we have dominated in football for the past decade or so, we have conveniently ignored the bigger picture. For example, USC now has two national titles in baseball. We have none, they have what amounts to two titles in womens basketball with a third very likely this year. A few years ago their mens basketball team advanced to the final four . When has our mens team ever done that? The answer is never. Yes, we recently won another soccer title and we’re good in golf, track etc. But it’s time to acknowledge the reality. USC is doing much better in intercollegiate athletics than our very insular fans are willing to concede. Except for football they are kicking to the curb presently in other major sports. In fact USC is getting better in football and is likely to make big gains on us o the next two or three years. A lot of energy has returned to that program. Are we sleeping on our football success? I hate to tell you, but the fragment is changing rapidly, and we’re yet to see if Dani’s more traditional approach can withstand the onslaught of unconventional and decidedly unethical attempts to dismantle the game we’ve always loved. This isn’t a mmm out student athlete freedom to choose their academic and athletic course in life. It’s about the greediness of some schools and their leaders to take advantage of the new “freedom” of student-athletes to hoodwink the young people for their own career benefit. Win at whatever cost, even if the students best interest isn’t factored into the new game of musical chairs. What about all those kids who find themselves stranded in the transfer portal with no way out? Something like crossing the event horizon on the promise of fame and adventure, only to find, too late, that there’s no way out. The gravitational force of college football and the jackals who tamper with the portal or pay players outright by exploiting the new rules is very powerful, and no one is willing now to fight back, to try to save the great game. Who really benefits from the new system ostensibly designed to free the student athletes to participate fully in our capitalist system and thus not be exploited for their talents? I think we know now who truly benefits. Dabo was right about the portal all along and the athletic press castigated him for it. Who’s gloating now?

Hahaha exactly. On the rise in what sport?

Baseball. Had 2 National titles and that is way way I the rear view mirror. Noting since 2012 say they are on the rise. They are a stagnant average baseball program. But hey we are in the same boat. Pretty equal here.

Basketball: one final 4 where your team got hit at the right time does not indicate anything. That was one year and the year after didn’t make the tournament. And y’all will be firing your coach this season more than likely. Same with Clemson. Equal in this one to

Soccer: y’all suck. Period. Not on the rise there: advantage heavy Clemson

Softball. Average to below average overall. Advantage heavy Clemson. Sad we just started a team hahaha

Football: very below average program. Advantage heavy heavy heavy Clemson: no light at the end of this tunnel.

Women’s basketball. Elite. We get it. Hang your hat on this. Advantage heavy heavy heavy SC. Don’t care

Other sports don’t really matter.

When you defend Trump today and I if key officials and alumni buy into his criminal enterprise they bring shame upon a great university. The institution is about raising young people up, giving them the tools to learn, to engage with the world, to demonstrate their humanity and a skill set that can make the world a better, more equitable place. Trump thrives on the contrary world view. A well rounded education scares the heck out of Trump and his supporters, because they rely on disinformation and outright lies to prop up their degenerate notion that only power matters. To Trump real knowledge is for losers. We are all diminished by the success of this evil narcissist. It’s even come to this: Russia is in the process of rolling into Ukraine, and yet Fox News has apparently cast its lot with Putin!! Frightening. So don’t dare suggest that Trump should be President again. If most Clemson officials, alumni, and fans who have never set foot in a university classroom support Trump in that effort, then I’m perfectly willing to walk away…and I’ve been a Tiger fan all my life, and a Clemson student. Oh , yea, and my wife and sister and law graduated from Clemson. Furthermore their father was a highly respected plant pathologist there for many years. As an outsider's view my initial response is, are you serious? Let's start with women's basketball. Good for SC's women's team but do you really care that much? I'd bet most any SC fan would forfeit a woman't basketball championship for a regular season win over Clemson in football.

As for baseball, yeah SC has two recent national championships but the last was 10 years ago. In fact, the failings of SC baseball has been a source of misery for that fanbase.

Football? I'll grant you SC football now seems to at least have a pulse but do you really see them being a threat to anyone good in the near term? There will be hype next season. I'm already hearing it about "what could be a close game with UGA." UGA and Clemson are going to put double digit beatdowns on SC in football. So is Texas A&M for that matter and SC will almost certainly lose again to Kentucky.

You may make some fair points about NIL and the transfer portal. No one knows where any of this is headed. Some, as I do, believe if the transfer portal is left alone with will work itself out. Eventually, players will see the stats on the kids who surrender a scholarship and wind up with nothing. As unfair and distasteful as it may be to some, coaches who want to remain competitive for championships, including Dabo, will have to adjust to this new way.

The USC programs are rising much more dramatically than you suggest. Did you notice that there were 18000 fans in Columbia yesterday and a national TV audience. I’ll take that any day for men or women. Football energy is clearly on the rise.. that’s how it started with Dabo. Much energy and commitment . Mens basketball is up and down at USC, but again they have a final four appearance in recent years. When we’re we there? I’m just saying that we should not become so hyper masculine about his superiority thing. The world of intercollegiate sports is not so clear, and even my Tigers couldn’t stay on top of the ACC forever. That’s life I sports. As for the portal, you are wrong to believe it will work itself out. Without a complete overhaul of the currently system it will not just resolve itself. Dabo gets that.

missed history class on South Carolina's football program. After Spurrier came on, they had energy. After Muschamp came on, they had energy. So yeah...they have energy now, but history suggests it's just another rise before the dip.

I mean, I hope it works out for Beamer because he seems to be an actual good dude compared to the moral blights that were Old Ball Sac and Muschump...but there is absolutely no read on the future of the program at this point. IMO, bringing on Rattler seemed more desperation than optimism.

I don't care if the SC women sold out Wembly Stadium. That fanbase would trade a womens' title for a football win over Clemson in a minute.

I live in Columbia and follow their forums and local talk radio. You seem far more excited and optimistic about their mens' basketball program then anyone here. Yeah, years ago the went to the Final 4 - so what? They benefitted nothing from it.

Let's talk football. Go back and look at the SC football results. Find me the big moment when it all looks like Beamer has found the key. The Florida game is the win they all talk about. Look at the 2021 Gators, what happened to them and their program. SC won a squeaker on a defensive score against E. Carolina and hung on to beat Vandy by 1 point. They played 3 Top 25 teams; UGA, A&M and Clemson. Average margin of loss was almost 30 points. The lost at home by 30 to a mediocre Clemson team - certainly mediocre in terms of offense. Beamer has generated. much needed excitement down here. I'm not sold that they've turned the corner on anything. We'll see about 2022. I think the lose to UGA, KY, A&M, Florida, Arky, Clemson, and Tennessee is a toss up at best.

Of course things change over time. SC will eventually beat Clemson in football again. Just like they'll beat UGA again. As far as some major shift in overall athletics, I just don't see it.

Re: The illusion of Clemson domination

Feb 22, 2022, 11:17 AM

tigerbill64 I'll attempt to be fair here. The generous summary is that your OP has one 'pony' to be found in the otherwise pile of manure that you wrote.

Good job on pointing out the exploitative aspects of the portal and NIL to those (numerous) ignorant HS kids who have superior athletic skills. (And yes, nearly all HS boys ... including those without athletic skills) are ignorant. (Ignorance does not make them 'bad.')

The rest of your post is filled with emotion (emotion is not logical); those parts (other than your good points on exploitative aspects of the NIL and the portal) reveal a disconnect with reality.

Trump? What's Trump (or Biden or Putin or Trudeau) got to do with the topic?

Masculine attitudes? Are you suggesting that the women who recognize the disproportionate importance of 'masculine' football only those 'butch' trans-gender women? Are you suggesting that 'normal / non-masculine' women are too stupid to recognize the relative importance of football [i.e., big revenue generator] compared to all of the other sports? Oh yeah, and that all men are masculine and therefore stupid?

And to top it off: You believe that U.of S.Carolina has a better athletics program than Clemson because (1) S.Carolina men's BB had a final 4 appearance; (2) their baseball team won two WS over a decade ago; (3) their women's BB team is great (sorry, but the attendance data & TV ratings prove that women's BB is an asterix as far as college sports)? ... oh yeah, the S.Carolina FB team is 'cycling in'?

It must have been you that I saw standing on the street corner with the sign "They're coming to get me" and shouting TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) slogans.

I made it about 1/3 through that, and it was not easy. To summarize, are you suggesting that Clemson is cycling out, or is UofSuC cycling in?

One of the two schools you mention only talk about women’s basketball. They don’t talk about anything else. And they would give up everything in life to have a chance at a football championship. No more to discus here.

No one school is going to be dominate at everything. Not to intentionally downplay these sports but SCAR can have baseball and women's basketball. Would I prefer Clemson be elite in those sports as well? Sure. However, football is the cash cow of the college athletics landscape and the revenue it brings in has done wonders for this university. Have you taken a stroll through campus in the last 10 years? Realistically, it would be great to be a bit more competitive in men's basketball but in outside of that, what would the school put more focus on without it hindering the money maker?

I guess we're ignoring the Clemson NC in soccer this past season?

The success of South Carolina in women's basketball is impressive, but I can honestly say that I don't care. I have in-laws that are huge South Carolina fans that never miss a down of football. They claim to be huge women's basketball fans as well but I've seen them on multiple occasions out doing something in the middle of a women's game because they didn't even realize there was a game that day.

There's only one USC, you Trump hating nitwit, and that's the University of Southern California. South Carolina is not USC and never will be. The real USC has had more first round draft picks and Heisman winners and Hall of Fame members than little Coot University ever dreamed of. I don't even like USC, but I at least respect them.

Point 2. Let's go Brandon

I’m just so glad Biden supporters got him in office personally. We’re doing so much better in this country, much less the world.
The whole western philosophy of limited government, strict adherence to the law, and private property rights had created a terrible situation, and we could learn so much from others as Americans.
The whole Regan notion of ‘Strength through force’ was clearly outdated.
I don’t know how much better of an example we need to see other than how these leaders handled the pandemic and all the moving forward. They’re just smarter than us and should be given more.
Individuals just aren’t able to make these decisions for themselves.
Oh! Before I forget. Progress is fantastic. I absolutely love how we changed our cherished college football without any roll-back protocols when it turns into the XFL (aka SEC) v FCS (and other schools not buying the blessed continuation of the wonderful benefits).
Obviously, the fans and the people are in control of college football and the policies that create our favorite past time. I hate traditions personally! I know all you CFB fans agree.

This is a joke right? A feeble attempt at humor or wit? No? Yikes, let me help. First, Let me lead off with this; few across the nation really care about baseball. It's fun. we are happy when the boys win, and we puff our chests when the team beats the chickens. Past that, few care. Big 3? Yeah, in professional maybe. Past that only Football and Men's Basketball even remotely move the meter. Oh, and the second part? First off, U of SC had one, ONE Women's title, not any others that you seem to want to claim. Regardless, who REALLY cares? seriously, unless your daughter is on the team, Women's Basketball is pretty horrible to watch 96% of the time, and I stand by that. And ratings for college AND pro would side with my argument. So, in summary, Try again( with a new name!)
