Because the true weak link on the Clemson Defense right now is the linebacker style of play and the scheme that Wes is dialing up. There's a cause and effect or chain reaction of sorts.

Most of the time whenever a play falls apart and a team is able to run 40, 50, 60+ yards on a busted play it is due to the following breakdown.

1. The ball is snapped, and the Defensive Line does what they're supposed to do. They create pure havoc on the line of scrimmage and usually get penetration in the back field. However, there's only a four-man front that is doing their part. The linebackers are 5-8 yards back playing soft coverage.

2. The next thing to happen in the play is that the QB or RB is scrambling behind the line of scrimmage and running for their lives.

3. The Defensive ends and Defensive Tackles are giving pursuit.

4. Linebackers are still staying back in the secondary waiting on the ball carrier instead of inserting leverage against the play.

5. The ball carrier exploits a gap in the line or takes the edge and uses the edge to leverage open field space.

6. Instead of the linebackers asserting leverage by backing the line, they lose gap integrity, and the ball carrier is able to escape the pursuit of the 300lbs defensive linemen that are pursuing them.

7. Instead of the linebacker cheating up and advancing to the ball carrier at the point of attack, they wait until the ball carrier comes to them.

8. Linebacker attempts to arm tackle or swipe at the ball and that does not work. This happens because the ball carrier was allowed to gain momentum and at that point you risk serious injury to advance against their run head-to-head to tackle them, so the linebacker has no choice but to attempt an arm tackle or swipe at the ball.

9. The ball carrier has to then be engaged and tackled by a safety or corner to prevent a score. Thus, the carrier is able to extend the drive on 3rd and long situations provided that they don't score a touchdown. It wears a defense down and by 4th quarter, there is nothing left in the tank on the defensive line. This also explains why teams have been able to come back late in games against the Clemson defense.

Wes Goodwin is taking all of the heat because he is not only the Defensive Coordinator, but also the linebacker coach. Also, the linebackers and defensive unit as a whole will run the scheme that he calls. That is why.
