If memory serves he was upset that Sammy got all the love. Now it the JCC name. thinking he is just riding the tide at this point. I would also add that the Tillman name on a building should be an issue for anyone who loves Clemson as Tillman was a murdering racist. JCC did own slaves and advocated for slavery since he benefited from it but i see not evidence he was more than a man of his times.

Hopkins got Baptized on the practice field, great player, but did not graduate. Not in the same category of a man as DW4. Nuk already has 3 illegitimate kids. I don't think Calhoun College is affecting his life negatively. I hope things work out for him personally, but off field problems in Houston probably why he got traded. Yale renamed their Calhoun College after a female computer scientist, instead of a U.S. Secretary of State, Senator, Vice President, and Secretary of War. Hopefully, he will graduate and continue to have a successful football career.

... build his body, develop his skills, and showcase his talent in order to receive a fortune from the NFL.
He did not bother to graduate from Clemson. He was not a member of the Calhoun Honors College.
He did not have to choose to attend Clemson on his way to the NFL. But he did.
He chose Clemson in spite of all of the things he says bother him now.
I’m glad he chose to play for Clemson. I wish he’d look at it in the same way
He was good for the program and the program was good for him.
That should be enough.

Sorry, but when it comes to Tillman Hall (which was Old Main for most of its existence before being renamed during the Jim Crow-Era), it should be renamed. Same with anything associated with Strom Thurmond. Here's a few quotes from good ole Pitchfork Ben Tillman:
"We of the South have never recognized the right of the Negro to govern white men, and we never will. We have never believed him to be the equal of the white man, and we will not submit to his gratifying his lust on our wives and daughters without lynching him." (Speech to the United States Senate)
"We deny, without regard to color, that 'all men are created equal'; it is not true now, and was not true when Jefferson wrote it." (Pitchfork Ben Tillman, South Carolinian (1967), by Francis Butler Simkins)
Sorry, but we really shouldn't have the focal point of our campus be named after a man that despicable. And it was only named after that because during the Jim Crow Era, other schools in SC started allowing black students and we didn't until Harvey Gantt came to campus. Naming Tillman Hall after Pitchfork Ben was a direct shot to black communities in the state to not send their kids to Clemson or try anything there. It's blatantly obvious because the original name of the building was "Old Main" which is what it should be. Rename it back to that or call it Harvey Gantt Hall.

Being sorry doesn’t answer the question ...

... where does it all stop?
Answer: it doesn’t.
Many people are okay with the Tillman Hall thing.
But, one demand leads to another and another, each more bold and with less tangible reasoning behind it.
It will not end, it will just get worse.
We’re not helping to bring people together. We’re driving them further apart.

Thomas Green Clemson also owned slaves. Should we rename the university?
I am not advocating for keeping Calhoun’s name; however, at a certain point positives and negatives must be weighed. George Washington won the revolution and was our first President. He also owned slaves. So did Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.
So should owning slaves, or supporting racism during a time where that was normal (whether it should have been or not) invalidate any other contributions a person makes? Should it make them unworthy of any honors they receive? I do not have the answer, but it is a question that requires one.

Case in point--
Getting rid of John C. Calhoun is not only getting rid of his slave ownership--it's getting rid of all of him, political theory and all, and that really is a shame. Calhoun was the political theorist who came up with the idea of the concurrent majority--the idea of guaranteeing minorities a voice and preventing them from being outnumbered and silenced by a numerical majority. Seems like such an idea could be helpful now.
People will say but he owned slaves and he meant WHITE minorities. I'm sure he did. But that doesn't mean the theory itself couldn't be retooled and used toward the kind of change people are seeking now.

Here's a couple more --
“I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”
“Our republican system was meant for a homogeneous people. As long as blacks continue to live with the whites they constitute a threat to the national life. Family life may also collapse and the increase of mixed breed ######## may some day challenge the supremacy of the white man.”
Oh wait, those are from Abraham Lincoln.
If it's true that Tillman was lynching blacks, then that's obviously disgusting even considering the era, but if we're renaming things because somebody had racist views, then America's got hundreds of thousands of things to rename, probably including 'Clemson'.

Yet the irony in those who call themselves "African American" when it was the BLACK AFRICAN slave masters, their own people, who sold their ancestors to American plantation owners! Many to this day also continue to express their disdain for this great country, so African Americans identify themselves by 2 countries that instill hurtful feelings and they supposedly hate! By this logic, "African American" must be changed!! Sounds silly, doesn't it?

No matter what, you can’t change history not should you.
That is what they want, to erase everything. It happened, that is how we have progressed over the years.
People still praise MALCOLM X and he was a huge racist, but we can’t just let the past be the past and leave #### alone.
There are no slaves now, no servants and etc. people are just people.
I’m sick of it being ok to call a whites person a Cracker and everyone is cool.
I’m sick of a white person being murdered by the police and nothing done about it.
At the end of the day we are all people. We should all have each other’s backs, not matter of color. However it seems like it only benefits one group and that’s sick because we are all GODS people.

Yes, yes, and yes! You have hit the nail on the proverbial head. I am weary of athletes taking advantage of what Clemson has given them and then turn around and say awful things about our school. I am also offended with Hopkins, DeShawn’ and everyone else’s reasoning and wanting to remove any mention of Calhoun and Tillman. My ancestry is descended from JCC. Sorry folks, that’s the way it was then. It’s history and we can’t change it so lets move forward harmoniously and with love.

Maybe when he decided to attend Clemson he did not understand the history of people like JCC. If players like Hopkins and Watson want to now use their platform to make a change then I am all for it. Community leadership is required to help all in the community.

He's represented himself and our university well and thinks Clemson should represent itself better. After he left Clemson there was a little bit of bad blood it seemed, but that is long gone and he's been very vocal about supporting the football program in recent years.
Why shouldn't he be able to express his interest in making changes to Clemson that may be important to him? Why does it have to be "well you went here and you didn't say anything then, so shut up now"?

You mean something like his talent wasn't appreciated. Just Maybe it was his attitude towards the way Morris chose to run his offense, and Morris took exception to Nuks constant complaining about the targets he was getting with a 5 star Sammy Watkins getting targets also. Sammy was a threat to take it to the house any time he was targeted bc Sammy was a much faster receiver!!!

I seem to remember him saying that he always said Daniel HS because he thought it was motivation for kids coming up in that school to achieve at the highest level. I think he tends to speak whatever way the wind is blowing at the moment. There are a lot of people that tend to do that though.

His reasons seem to change from time to time. I'm fine with him not talking about Clemson, if he doesn't approve of us now, but we sure didn't hurt his development as a player. I'm over him, frankly.

Your are applying 2020 morality to the Old South of the 1800's. It's not going to work.
Now if people wanted to erect something now to commemorate Calhoun it would never happen. History is a fickle thing if you don't put it into the proper context. Erase it and you are da.mned to repeat it.

CU_Tigers4life®You are correct: There WAS no morality in the Old South of the 1800s. Why would we now celebrate something/someone who stood for something so reprehensible? Just because it took us this long to figure out its evil does not make it inapplicable.

Who celebrating Calhoun? I checked the calendar and didn't see a John Calhoun Appreciation day listed....What you are labeling celebration is more accurately a historical artifact. They are not to be erased, they are to be studied and taught about a dark time in American History that show when men were capable of both good things and bad things at the same time.
Do you want the Pyramids at Giza destroyed? The Tower of London? The Incan ruins in Peru? The Ancient Ruins in Rome?
These and many more were sights of unthinkable acts that are historical...

Everyone jumping on the Calhoun Honors College thing is a bit puzzling to me because unless you were actually in the honors college, students weren't really familiar with it and rarely even heard anything about it. It was a very small unostentatious or unembellished part of campus life for the vast majority of students.

All I ever heard was that he did not graduate from Clemson-at least that is what he said. Of course, this is like Bill Cosby's coming out party. One person speaks out and then many do. I would assume as a student athlete maybe he didn't feel comfortable speaking out. He was always very quiet. His words and character came out on the field. One of the big problems is man's history is always full of screw ups.I graduated in the 80's and I was never aware of any of this but I can see where it would be offensive-actually to all of us.I think once something happens and racism is brought up, it, to me,is like someone pointing a finger at me just because I'm white. Somewhere, there needs to be civil discourse where progress is a steady defined goal. All we have is anger which was ignited by that ####### cop(not referring to all police-just this situation at the moment). We need calm and we need thoughtful, non combative ideas for progress. We all-black and white- need to agree that there are points in history we cannot fix. we need to "change the things we can, accept the things we cannot change and have the wisdom to know the difference"

Does this mean we need to remove the Calhoun mansion in the heart of our campus?
Thankfully the town changed its name from Calhoun to Clemson, South Carolina many years ago.

Sure is a lot of hate for something y'all love so much.
We can't change or erase history because we've learned it's bad. Isn't that the point of history and learning from mistakes?! I don't condone slavery of any kind, but we have to realize these men were living in their time. The world has changed a good bit since the 1800s.
Also, if anyone is bothered by anything a university has or names their buildings/colleges, etc, don't attend! Frankly, Clemson has far more good offerings than a name on a building. Letting this type of situation get in the way of a bigger dream seems ridiculous.

And is exactly why when those type of players are done providing entertainment for me at Clemson, I have little interest in their future endeavors

Does Nuke want the city and school renamed as well? What about Tillman or STI? Does Nuke think Calhoun is the only one who owned slaves, was racist or segregationist? I am not advocating for those institutions but changing names does not change history.

He tends to act like a baby when he doesn't get his way.
-He was upset that Sammy got the ball more than he did at Clemson. -He whined about not getting the ball enough in Houston. -He complains about a freaking name on Clemson's campus.
Time for DeAndre to grow up and be a man.

I am an alumni and was a huge supporter of DeShaun. I believe he could have beaten Alabama the first time, left to his own devices. But I gotta say, I didn't feel much like family when the BOT jumped to rename the Honors College because two pro football players demanded it.
What about all the graduates of the Honors College and the alumni who came before? How do they fit into the family?

True, you can’t erase history but it doesn’t mean it has to be honored. Part of German history is hitler and I don’t expect you will find buildings or statues honoring hitler in Germany. Put the likes of Calhoun where he belongs. In the history books, not on a building, or statue or anyplace that would honor his name.

why would some HS grad care what my schools Honors College is? Who may this punk call his opinion as said reasoning? His 'reasoning' shall remain 'his' 'opinion' and what I call 'lack of reasoning'. Pay college plays and just watch me not pay this school anything bc it will quickly become just another NFL whih I do not watch especiall since players think it ok to kneel during homage to my United States of America. Sad. I was raised to give respects.

I never knew the people that buildings are named after. I would be Happy with the following changes:
Tillman Hall changed to Righteousness Clock Tower JCC Honors Changed to Integrity Honors School
Replace other building names with Fidelity Glory Prestige Merit Respect Esteem Honesty Ethics Morality Principle Rectitude Nobility Decency Fairness Justness Justice Truthful Trustworthy Reliability Faithful Fidelity
With my close brush with the minimum 2.0 GPA needed for graduation, rename the graduation Ceremony to: Thank God Almighty, Free at Last.

What about Calhoun’s son-in-law that owned slaves - had the name CLEMSON? We changing that too? Changing these names isn’t the answer. No offense to Hopkins and Watson, but if it’s offensive now, it was offensive when they attended Clemson. They have a larger platform to speak on today - in part - because of Clemson. Never was okay to own slaves nor will it ever be okay - sadly it still exists in this world. Changing these names should not be the focus. It implies that my alma mater supported slavery by calling attention to the actions of these men which sadly was commonplace for many whites and some of color during that time in our state. Rather see Hopkins and Watson focus their platform in other areas versus these name changes.

Shame on both of you!
As an alumnus if Clemson and a proud graduate, I am appalled that you can have such narrow minded views of the very university that gave you the opportunity to obtain your dreams. You cannot erase history or change it by removing names nor statues of the founding fathers of our university.
It saddens me to think that either of you two are so hate-filled as to choose to use the way of life as it was in their day to dishonor the very men who founded this university.
Slavery ended many years ago. Those men no more chose their fate in life than you or I did.
Before you disrespect our university with this behavior, you should learn your history of it.
I am not condoning slavery, and certainly do not condone police brutality, but you need to realize that not all slave owners were bad people, just like not all people of any generation, color, or background are. There are bad apples in all bunches.
You should both be thankful to Clemson and it’s founding fathers for the opportunities they have provided for you instead of degrading the university and its founding fathers with hatred.
I for one am embarrassed to know you learned so little and have no respect nor appreciation for what this university has done for you.
Shame on you both!

Isn’t Clemson a wonderful place?! A place where, as MLK dreamed, the sons of former slaves and slave-owners, can unite in victory, opportunity and purpose the gridiron and class room. Or we can just ruin it for all by dwelling on the negative, which only affects us, if we are weak and let it. God help us!

One of the arguments I see a bunch on here against changing the name of Tillman is "it won't change history". That argument is both true and completely beside the point. The point is that there are people who still think like Tillman did. Lots. If you need examples, scroll back through this thread. The point is that we need to do EVERYTHING WE CAN to show that thinking like Tillman did is no longer OK in America. Yes, changing the name of a building is a ridiculously small step but its a step in the right direction so stop standing in the way of those who want to take that step.

Another argument I see on here is "where will it end". This is a "slippery slope" argument. We can't do X because that could lead to Y or even Z. It's a good sign that there isn't any other good argument against doing X.

This thread is pretty embarrassing for Clemson.
I'm personally conflicted on the "don't erase history" vs "this is disrespectful to black students" debate, but regardless of where you fall there are valid points for both sides. You don't have to agree with what Nuk believes--in fact you have the right to vehemently disagree--but many of you didn't address his statements and instead attacked him:
"He is not a graduate therefore his opinion means nothing "
"I'm glad now that Hopkins won't be playing with Watson."
"DeAndre Hopkins has never been Clemson material."
"He tends to act like a baby when he doesn't get his way."
"why would some HS grad care what my schools Honors College is? Who may this punk call his opinion as said reasoning"
People complain about who's ruining the country these days: Is it the conservatives or the liberals? The answer is it's the people on both sides of the aisle who act like the people above. People who don't just disagree with opinions, but dislike any person who holds that opinion. It's sad to see so many act so childish.
