paging "walrus"....

I went down a rat hole last night looking at some old threads, and saw where "walrus" posted that he moved equipment for some very notable bands back in the day... Allman Bros, Johnny Winter, etc. I'm curious to learn more... how did you end up with that job? What year(s) was this? I assume you traveled with the bands, and if so, you must have some incredible stories to share...

edit: What really intrigued me was that he mentioned Duane, which means we're talking about the original legendary lineup. Which I saw in Littlejohn in Sept 1971.

Rolling Stones back when they visited Death Valley. He came into the Sky City dept store, where I was working part-tie,to buy cheap boots.
He basically said to become a roadie you needed to be a lot like a "Carnie",..working cheap, sleeping in trailers, while working odd and varying hours. Constantly travelling.
He said most Roadies all were "partiers" and there was an unwritten agreement between the management company and them that substance usage was accepted while on the job.

He was an interesting guy, though he did stink.

Okay...first story...

Moving Johnny Winter at an outdoor concert in NC. Johnny was an incredible guitarist but an albino, very sun sensitive. Due to a scheduling mix-up he had to play in the middle of the day which kind of worried all of us. The sucker walked out of his trailer dressed like Zorro, big black wide-brimmed hat, black long sleeves, huge sunglasses,, long black pants and boots. AND BLACK FELT GLOVES! This was in a mountain valley
near Asheville but it was still a good 85 degees, but he said it was okay and PLAYED WEARING THE GLOVES, Beautifully. I have seen Hendrix, Santana, Alvin Lee, Duane Allman, Ted Nugent, Neil Young, and Jeff Beck and I don't think that any of those superstars could play wearing gloves, but Johnny did.

After the show we had two little black haired groupies who had snuck backstage grab Johnny on the way to his trailer. He picked the one with the biggest #####, wearing a gold see-through top. We moved his stuff and set up Canned Heat. I was standing with a group testing what we thought was a dead mike by the trailer when she came out and yelled "D-mn that was fun, I've never been balled by an Albino before." The mike wasn't dead, some idiot had patched into the main board and that went out to the audience.
