Jim Phillips.

A month ago if you had asked me to name the commissioner of the ACC I could only tell you, "It's the guy who came after Swofford."
I know nothing about him. Don't know his background. Don't even know what job he had before this one.
Is he competent? Is he a problem solver? How does he handle severe business challenges?
I have no idea.
But, I do think he has been presented a monumental task. In spite of the recent comments of ND and the SEC about not being in any hurry to expand, anybody who breathes a sigh of relief, relaxes and says, "Whew, that's all behind us, at least for a few years" is being naïve at best.
I think Jim Phillips has the unenviable task of leading the ACC to dissolution. And, that will be difficult. How do you figure out a path where "Everybody wins"? You don't. So, how do you figure out a path where "Some folks win big, some folks break even, and others lose as little as possible"?
His task is, "Under the circumstances, what is the best possible outcome for all 13 teams? Individually, not collectively."
I have no idea. But, as I jokingly tell people, "That's why you get the big bucks." Phillips is being paid big bucks for situations like this. The university presidents are saying, "Go earn your money and look out for my school as you earn it."

and USC / UCLA to BIG, I could see the next move not taking place till next year.
They probably have a lot of financial nerds pouring over data and projections before making a move.

stays together. It's Clemson's job to make sure Clemson does what's best for Clemson, no matter what conference it's in.

If thr ACC stays fully intact then Clemson football is done S we k ow it. We will only be playing mid major teams because sec and B10 will only play within their leagues

is cleaning-up the $#!7show he inherited from that idiot John Swofford the results of which could lead to the ruination of the conference as we know it.

He's in a tough spot no doubt. He doesn't have many options. I think his goal should be to keep the ACC relevant and not let the Pac or Big 12 pass the ACC. If he could bring in Penn state and ND and get a new TV deal close to the Big and the SEC that would be the best case. Probably dreaming. Whose out there that he could get? Whoever it is they have to make the TV contract more valuable. The ACC is full of bottom feeders already.

Penn St will never come to the ACC. This is a pipe dream.
As it stands now, the ACC will not be passed by the Big 12 or Pac-whatever. The ACC will be significantly ahead of those two. Now, if teams like Clemson and Florida St. leave, that changes things. As it stands now though, the ACC is squarely ahead of those two conferences.

Nothing was going to happen this year. However, I do expect further expansion of the BIG and SEC. We just need to be ready to jump when that time comes. Until then, it’s almost like a game of chicken - which team(s) challenges the GOR first. It may come down to a collective challenge from a few teams at once.

From what esecpnu was reporting or speculating on Sirius XM yesterday, the PAC and Big 12 are talking about merging the remaining teams into one conference. This would leave the ACC and us stuck.

Would it really though? Two average leagues merging just equals a bigger, yet still average league with a bunch of weird cross country match ups. UCF vs. Oregon St? No thank you.

If it's even possible that he could pull that move off, I would even say Jim is the right guy to move the ACC into the future of college FB, and that Clemson should stay and weather this chit storm that the SEC and the Big has put college FB in. But I just don't believe that Jim Phillips or any other commissioner can save the ACC if the SEC, and the Big continues with their move of building their super conferences!!!

I will add that bc of the way Swoffart ran the ACC for so long without a logical thought in his mind, Jim Phillips job could be at a severe risk to be over before he has a chance to pull the ACC back from the dive that Swoffart put it in!!!

schools in order to understand collectively what is best, and to lead to achieve that 'best', he was hired by the schools within the ACC to lead the conference itself over the next x amount of years. His duty isn't to do what's best on an individual basis for the schools, that would be a task that couldn't be achieved.
Clemson has a President and Board to do what's best for Clemson. As does FSU, Wake Forest, etc.

1. Joined the alliance and had a ridiculous presser. Just about the dumbest thing in sports from the get go. And really just snake oil type crap. 2. Voted against the expanded playoff. He and we will pay for that one. 3. The ACC/PAC10 loose partnership. Sure loose and give away part of our network and have a championship in Vegas. LOL, championship of what? The ACC champ will play the pac remnant champ for a chance at a loss to eliminate from playoff. Risk a playoff to play a game for conference money and champion of nothing.
This is the crap this stooge is pushing. No confidence at all. Glad Clemson officials never uttered a word about alliance or loose partnership.
He was athletic director of Northwestern.

I agree. Based on what I have read of the GOR it’s a nearly impossible situation. If he keeps the conference together and financially competitive they should put up a statue of him. I think his only hope is that ND saved him by joining the league which seems remote at best. The other is that ESPN helps create an expanded conference with west coast teams nd more TV revenue to block FOX.
