Any advice appreciated. I posted daughter of was accepted to Clemson

Because she was waitlisted and not informed until April 26th apparently there is no help available. No grants/scholarships. These folks want me to get a loan for 54k or whatever it cost. I can't sell my DNA which would be gold because I've had a vasectomy. We may attempt to at least move her to my peeps or sister in SC if we can get Clemson to accept it. This also seems complicated and maybe not doable. They say if they allowed that so many people would try. If it does work it isn't accepted for 12 months.

then $20K for each following year.
So $50K + $20K X 3 = $110K = 29,412 hungry man dinners.

Congrats on her acceptance, no way they would let me in today.
Yeah, I assume you would have to relocate her residence to get the reduction (after 1 yr) but I got no real life experience since I've never really left Anderson County.

go to Clemson because she's a fan, but I would find the dollar general of colleges where you live and get her a degree that way.
She can always be a clemson alum later when she goes for her masters.
Like TRDJ said, you're going to spend 125K to net 30k a year

but I remember I was out of money and had one semester (well, two summer sessions) left to graduate. Got a student loan for $5,500 and paid for both sessions easily, and lived pretty high on the hog. Long story short, it was cheap back then (1995).

probably is pretty well connected. Their parents maybe even floated a big down payment on that starter home and their mortgage is "affordable" by comparison.
Daughter of also goes into education and gets the loan forgiven after 10 years? Is that still a thing?

than $54K a year. And one is in the frikkin Ivy League. Disclosure: Both APM college kids got nice schollies. And littlest APM is in building trades at his high school and will make more than APM shortly after graduation.
And even if they had wanted to go to Dear Old Clemson, not sure APM could have done it at full price.

Going into a trade is a great idea
1
May 20, 2025, 10:02 AM

|
But whoever does it, needs to know that the the lifespan doing many trades is much shorter and harder on the body than an office gig, and they need to plan accordingly.
Nobody 45+ years old wants to (or probably should be) be crawling in and out of 16" holes in boilers welding reheater tubes upside down and backwards, or putting a roof on a house in June, or on the side of a house 2+ floors up installing siding.
There needs to be an exit plan from that kind of work.

price, don't even ask about getting lottery money. As a second-gen alum, I paid out of state for my daughter several yrs ago (she was in the first yr of Bridge Program, graduated in 3 1/2 yrs, CJ Spiller was in her graduation). It was painful, but it's a cool thing and I'm proud she's an alum.

I'd have her do local community college first, live at home, pick general classes that would transfer in (can research this on Clemson's website). Prolly save enough on room and board to make up for out of state tuition the next year, she will probably live off campus after freshman year and can take the steps to establish in state then. If she does well at CC, likely will get in. If she doesn't, to be frank you might be wasting that 54K because she may not be able to advance.

ago. I had some good conversations with admissions, but there was no recourse. I was going to pay the full amount anyway (I couldn't raise him on Clemson and then tell him he couldn't go).
Luckily, he chose an in-state school (to stay with his buddies), majored in beer-drinking and flunked out.
I do think the best advice I've seen on this thread is to go to a technical school for a year (to establish residency - although look into the details of that) and then transfer in. It USED to be much easier to transfer in than to come in straight out of HS.

If so, as has been discussed many a time on here, taint easy. Clempson has closed some loopholes on that.
Anyhow, others have chimed in with good pro tips on what to do.
On the bright side, at least you have a kid who WANTS to go to Clemson. APM could not get lilAPM to even apply even though he did take a tour, and lilAPMette never even considered it.
Good luck.

We applied in the fall, provided documentation and it went into effect the next spring. Saved a bundle.

We can't walk away from that. Its too much money for not doing much. So you started paying out of state then moved to get it a year later? Im trying to set her up at my parents address in The North Dirty. Now they want you established for 12 months.

with a note that says, "establish this, honkies."
I will repeat. Clemson is not worth what they want for out of state tuition.

At one time, if she had been living somewhere else and only she moved, the university also wanted proof she was actually living in the new spot--SC DL copies, bills, insurance etc in her name at the new address. I'm not sure if that's still required.
