I think we're being duped ...

Powers that be knew what the transfer portal would turn into ... just like they knew what NIL would be like (even though they swear up and down that "no one could have seen this coming").
Now, they are fanning the flames of outrage for kids trapped in the portal: "some of these kids are losing their chance at an education" ... blah, blah, blah.
Their fix ? Increase the scholarship limit per team, or do away with it altogether. Then, these poor kids are guaranteed to find a new home.
The end game you ask ??
Funnel all the talent to the SEC, just like the 1960s ... SEC teams could have rosters of 150-200 players. Kids that don't pan out are forced into the portal.
This guarantees that their "brand" will go unchallenged every season. Imagine if every 4-5 star kid signed with the SEC.
Let's see if there will be an assault on the 85 limit from the media. I expect it this fall.

I don't think the SEC has anything to do with it, but I could see them increasing the scholarship limit.

Most pundits do all they can to give the SEC an advantage. One only has to look at the weekly college football polls. Most SEC teams are present in the top 25, especially preseason. Just look in July or August at the preseason top 25 teams. Most SEC teams will be listed. Pure bias.

The SEC is the best football conference. That's why it happens.

They have 2 great teams. But to rank Vandy, SCAR, Missou, and such as preseason top 15 is idiotic

They put by far the most players in the NFL. It is the best conference no matter how much we don't like it.

I’m starting to think the SEC and ESPN run the show. Lot of ESPN money running through that conference. I mean it’s pretty bad when the other conferences have to band together like they are worthless on their own.

The Portal was open to us as well, we just refused to use it?

Most of the kids in the portal...

are looking for more PT or a bigger payday.
Increasing the scholarship limitations isn't going to fix those two issues IMO.

"Now, they are fanning the flames of outrage for kids trapped in the portal: "some of these kids are losing their chance at an education" ... blah, blah, blah."
This is truly a modern take..... it certainly is NOT the kids decision to take responsibility for themselves.... LMAO. The ones zipping in an out of the portal could not care less about education.
We need a new 'league' of sorts. If the SEC, etc want to band together and become a true NFL minor league....great! All the NIL players can go there and play. the rest of the collleges can keep the college football national title 'sacred' with true student athletes. Once you get paid though, you cannot come back and play football in the 'college' game.
my two cents..... LOL

I'd much rather have an NFL minor league and have all the NIL $$$ there and out of CFB, but not so sure there'd be many big donors throwing cash at it.

It wasn't the SEC or the NCAA that pushed for NIL. California law was changed that "no individual or institution could interfere with a student at a state supported school from making profit on NIL". I wish the NCAA would have put on their big boy underwear and said "See ya". I've heard Saban fears the NIL and now I've heard the SEC will use the NIL to cut everyone else out. In my humble opinion Coach "Rat Poison" would much rather not have to deal with the distractions of NIL or the portal.

I would point out the flaw in your worried scenario is the Big SEC teams haven’t been exactly adhering to an 85 scholarship limit. Bama has used everything from the medical grey shirt at the beginning of Saban’s tenure to blatant over signing and gently prodding under performers to find another school. Of course ole Kirby learned at Sabans foot and practices that, Jimbo at A&M has never felt constrained by rules, Tennessee always states they will never do anything that puts them at a competitive disadvantage, LSU blatantly paid for their latest national championship and who knows what lengths Texas and OU will go to to rise to the top of the conference.

Recruiting 25 a year always had me scratching my head. IMO though increasing scholarships does little to nothing to fix these issues. Parity… not sure what that looks like is needed because as it’s been stated numerous times the highest bidder will get the best talent. I’m still unsure of who among these decision makers did not see this coming. Boosters, money, and young kids… not a recipe for an even playing field. Just recruit 100 cut 15 and pay the top 85. Good luck to those that did not make the cut.
