APM interacts with a lot of law enforcement peeps and it is true, there are American "insurgents" out there. During the BLM stuff, there were IEDs planted, explosives, etc. Luckily nothing major happened.
I can tell you this - law enforcement are very concerned.

taken out by a lucky shot with a .50 cal. But that's not exactly news to the Pentagon, nor a real concern since I doubt these planes are going to be running combat missions at slow speeds just over the tree tops.

up to two miles with a trained shooter. That's factoring in a steady shooting platform and performing the necessary trigonometry to acquire a (relatively) stationary target. A jet at 2500 feet is well within the range of that caliber, but hitting a moving jet would be the stuff of movies unless it's pure luck. I'll cast my complete doubt on any INTENTIONAL small-arms fire theories.
