ESPN's take - "post" round 1 of the draft

Apr 26, 2019, 1:27 AM

The most baffling, absurd, mind-boggling, stupid, ridiculously inexplicable picks of the NFL's 1st round draft (according to the ESPN know-it-alls) - TWO:

Pick #4 - - Clemson's "Cle" (ACC)

Pick #6 - - Duke QB Daniel Jones (ACC)

How could the Raiders & Giants be that crazy? ESPN talking (dead) heads think those 2 teams completely squandered picks 4 & 6. How DARE they flush a couple of top-10 picks on two ACC LOSERS!!

What a sickening mess ElitistSPN is.

I didn't get that at all (from ABC).

Clelin wasn't being "predicted" as a top-10 pick by most of the mock drafts leading up.

Jones from Duke was a surprise (at least to me).

But, I didn't care for celebrity-type elbow rubbing that the female ESPN reporters exhibited....it ruined it for me. They need to be reminded that it's the NFL draft, and it's not about "them".

Here’s what I think happened

Cle was Oakland’s guy with their 1st pick but they knew he’d likely be there in the early teens so they tried to find a trade partner to move back but couldn’t make a deal so they took their guy.

If you look at their first round, they placed a huge emphasis on physicality and toughness. Hard to go wrong getting those kind of players.

Exactly. You are not going to go wrong drafting Clelin Ferrell. The dude comes from a military background, is serious as a heart attack, straight as an arrow, and tough as nails. He is not going to pick up a cocaine habit. He is not going to punch a chick and embarrass the franchise. He is not going to get complacent or egotistical and coast or stop working. He is not going to be an uncoachable diva who disrupts your locker room or team chemistry.

What he will do is clock in every day, work his tail off, stay hungry, and set the tone for the team: this is how you prepare. This is how you work. As long as he stays healthy, he's going to be a dominant football player, and he's going to be dominant for a good long time. Are all the guys who couldn't block him in college - like, say, Jonah Williams - suddenly going to be able to block him because they're wearing different-colored jerseys in the NFL?

Nope. Which is why it's easy to point to him and go: this is the surest thing there is at edge in the draft. If you absolutely, positively, gotta have a pass rusher, Ferrell is your guy.

Stuff like that just never occurs to Count Chocula - err, sorry, Mel Kiper - which is why listening to him make bold sweeping utterly self-assured proclamations that often end up dead wrong always makes my teeth ache.

“If Jimmy Clausen isn’t a success at QB in 8 years, I’ll retire.”

^ Absolutely. While I admit I have never bern sold on Gruden being an evaluator of talent, he does always favor veteran guys, and those who have strong leadership and work ethic. As for Cle, it cracks me up on some of the reports I saw on him, one saying he wore down in games. Umm, really? Please, I wanna see that tape where he was tired. Did they come to that because of the way CU rotates guys to keep them fresh and give experience? Maybe we SHOULD do like Saban and play starters 97% of the game and create no experience and depth. These talking heads are wrong more than they are right. Still waiting on Kiper to retire after his Jimmy Clausen prediction.

I put my trust in the people who are going to pay the players, not those who set themselves up as experts on assessing a player's talent level.

These are the folks who think Kyler Murray is the top pick?

Apr 26, 2019, 8:38 AM

He is an incredible athlete but I just don't see it.
