It’s silly to think that NIL is the first chance for players to be paid. People who are in an uproar and saying that schools will use this as a recruiting tool, what do you same ppl say every time UGA brings in a big recruit?? “They pulled out the checkbook!”
Players can just do this legally now and not have to worry about getting suspended for a season for taking some money for signing an autograph that a grown man is going to turn around and sell for triple what the athlete was paid.
This is good for the kids. They can now make the money on their own and use their name and their personal value to do so.
I know it’s not the good ole days of thinking that’s these kids are playing for the pride of their school and all that but we are still watching some really good football players.
Each school will have to hire more ppl to oversee this concern. All it takes is one slip-up of a paid-for fan picture with the football player wearing a school logo. What will be the punishment? A fine? A missed game? These are things we will see over the course of the season. It’s easy for players to market themselves now, but how will it be done during the season?
I kinda wonder if the school can pay them a deal prior to season so that the player focuses on the season and not worry about being in Charleston Sunday morning to take pictures for a car dealership.
I’m all for players getting paid. But it can be a double-edged sword.
